About Oakland

In 1772, Spanish explorers from New Spain claimed Oakland for the Spanish king. The Spanish royal government granted the region to a man named Luis Maria Peralta for his Rancho San Antonio during the early 1800’s. Peralta divided his property between his four sons in 1942, when he died. His sons opened the property to settlement by fur-traders, European whalers, loggers, and American pioneers. When California was won by the U.S. during the Mexican-American war, and when gold was discovered in California in 1848, Full-scale development and settlements occurred. In 1852, the legislature of California Oakland as a town.

With the advents of the railroads, the community and its surroundings grew quickly and soon became a major railroad station between the late 1860’s and the early1870’s. This included the construction of the Long Wharf Terminus and the largest servicing facilities and railroad yards in West Oakland that continued to be a major local employer by the Southern Pacific well into the 1900’s.

Oakland's need for a seaport and rise to industrial prominence resulted in the 1902 digging of a shipping and tidal channel. This created the island of the close by community of Alameda. the community’s population doubled in 1906 with the refugees who became homeless following the San Francisco fire and earthquake who had fled to Oakland. A Chevrolet plant was opened at the southernmost edge of Oakland in 1915. Oakland was the home of many different manufacturing industries, that included shipbuilding, automobiles, bakeries, canneries, and metals by 1920. The overall post war recovery, the widespread use of the automobile, and the discovery of oil in Los Angeles fueled much of the economic growth. During the 1920’s, Oakland grew considerably. Many of these laborers were African Americans from the western South, who greatly enjoyed the prosperity during the years of the war. The automobile and shipbuilding industries virtually vanished soon after the war. This was also true of those virtually evaporated, as did the jobs that came with those industries. Many of those who had made the community their home didn’t leave Oakland, as they were wealthy residents. However, some people relocated into newly developing suburbs. However, Oakland, which had become very prosperous before the war had a population the was ever increasingly poor by the late 1960’s.

Oakland was the location of some innovative funk music scene that resulted in some well-known such as the Graham Central Station and Sly and the Family Stone during the 1960’s. The Oakland Chapter of the Hell’s Angele’s Motorcycle club started to expand into a formidable organization also during the 1960’s. It became the most respected and feared of all of the Hell’s Angle’s Chapters by the 1980’s. Its Oakland Clubhouse is still located in East Oakland. In sports, the NFL Oakland Raiders won Super Bowl XI in 1977. the Golden State Warriors won the 1974/1975 NBA championship and the Oakland Athletics MLB club were victorious in three in a row World Series wins.

After his inauguration in 1999, Jerry Brown, the mayor of Oakland continued his predecessor Elihu Harris' public policy to support the downtown housing development in the region defined as Oakland’s Central Business District 1998 General Plan. This became known as the 10K plan because Mayor Brown's stated goal was to add 10,000 residents to downtown Oakland. This plan resulted in redevelopment projects in the Jack London District, where Mayor Brown bought and then sometime later resold an industrial warehouse that he used for his personal residence, as well as the Lakeside Apartments District close to Lake Merritt, where two projects were approved. The 10K plan effected downtown. The Chinatown district as well as the historic Old Oakland district.
