About Emeryville

The City of Emeryville, California is located between Berkley and Oakland on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, directly opposite San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Emeryville covers more than a square mile. However, its planned location is near one of the busiest bridges in the world, and transcontinental railroad lines with service to Chicago, Los Angeles, and Seattle, Los Angeles, in the middle of the Bay Area metropolitan core of several major freeways which makes it a very desirable place to shop, work, and live.

The settlement was considered an ideal place for indigenous people to settle in as well as for American and Spanish that followed them long before the settlement was known as Emeryville.

Much the same as these days, the Temescal Creek flowed into the bay from the willow thicket near its mouth and the eastern hills, which provides ideal location for human settlement. Mudflats rich with rocky areas with oysters, clams, oysters, and hunting, fishing and acorns from the local oak trees that provide easily exploited food source. Indigenous People lived her in small villages for thousands of years before European contact.

However, during the 1770’s, the Spanish explored the East Bay area and didn’t encounter any native settlements in the Emeryville region, while villages were located to the north next to the Carquinez Strait, and to the south next to the San Lorenzo Creek. They believed that the lack of indigenous people in the region to the large abundance of bears. After the Spanish arrived, and archeological evidence, there is any evidence that there was any indigenous habitation and there was no native habitation after the year 1650. Therefore, it appears that the Emeryville region was abandoned by the indigenous people long before the area was settled by European people.

Around the bay, shell mounds composed of human remains, food waste, and sea shells are one of the most distinctive features of early native settlements. These were accumulated over thousands of years. All around the bay there are hundreds of these mounds existing and one of the biggest was at the mouth of Temescal Creek.

The shell mound in Emeryville actually consisted of many mounds of different sizes, and were made at several different times by the pre-Ohlone people. Surviving into the 1900’s, the large mound, which had a conical in shape and measured approximately 60 feet tall. The Ohlone might have expanded this mound and had a village atop it. However, the shell mound in Emeryville appears to have been abandoned approximately 700 years ago, around 1250 AD. Built on one of the close by smaller mounds sometime around 1840 was the house of a European settler.

Between 1876 and 1924m for nearly 50 years, large mound was the location of an amusement park, known as Shell Mound Park. However, the mound was leveled to make way for industrial development. During the following 75 years, this location was contaminated extensively by industrial waste, and the shell mound, was mostly forgotten and no longer visible. The only reminder was a dead-end street named Shell mound Street, which provided access steel mills and the insecticide and paint plants in the region.

The industrial buildings were demolished in 1999 by the Emeryville Redevelopment Agency. Remediation of the contaminated site was started in preparation of development of the Bay Street Mixed Use Project. The earliest remains from the shell mound that dated back from the pre-Ohlone period from between 2,000 and 2,500 years ago were discovered, during the process of site remediation. The California Native American Heritage Commission appointed a most likely descendant, to oversee excavation work, and many human and remains and native artifacts were unearthed

In an undisclosed location, the human remains reinterred on the site after the completion of excavation work. One of the streets in the development was named Ohlone Way, which honors the indigenous people who lived at the location. Once the shell mound was abandoned, a memorialization park was established next to the banks of Temescal Creek, which is currently a flood control channel, and an informational website was developed. The Emeryville Shell-mound website offer the native people in the region and the shell mound.

The transformation of Emeryville to a modern mixed-use urban center from an old industrial community Between 1990’s and the 2000’s, has been completed by a number of community enhancements and development projects. All-together, these projects have added numerous housing units as well as more than a million square feet of commercial space to the Emeryville. Wareham constructed a residential and commercial complex next to the new Amtrak station between the 1990s and early 2000s.This station was named the Emery Station. This includes the Emery Station North laboratory and office buildings across the street, which were completed between 1999 and 2003, as well as Emery station one as well as the 100-unit Terraces residential buildings along the railroad. In 2007, the Emery Station East laboratory and office located on Hollis Street was completed. These buildings house a many different cutting-edge biotech laboratories, that include, among others, Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceutical, JBEI (Joint BioEnergy Institute), Amyris Biotechnologies and the Ernest Gallo Research Institute.
