About Manteca

Manteca, California is located in San Joaquin County, 48 miles northeast of San Jose, California and 11 miles south of Stockton, California. The community part of the greater Lodi/Stockton metropolitan region. The community of Manteca was established in 1861 by a man named Joshua Cowell. Originally, the community of Manteca was comprised of houses on the corner of what is currently known as Yosemite and Main Streets. The railroad track was laid by the Central Pacific Railroad right through the community of Manteca in 1873. The original name of the community that was recommended was Cowell. However, another community named Cowell was already in existence, and it was decided to name the community Monteca. However, this was a misspelling of the name, which how the community came to be known Manteca, which translates from Spanish into lard. The year 1918 brought the incorporation of Manteca and a city, and the first mayor was Mr. Cowell.
