Between southern Kern County and northern Los Angeles County, there is a 3,000 square mile high closed basin known as the Antelope Valley. This valley includes the communities of Mojave, Rosamond, Palmdale, and Lancaster, is located in the western Mojave high desert, and is one of nine valleys in California that have the same name. For approximately 11,000 years, the area was populated by many different cultures and the Antelope Valley was a trade route for Native Indians traveling between New Mexico and Arizona and to the coast of California. During the early 1770ís there was some nonnative exploration that took place. However, it wasnít until the 1840ís that the first permanent community was established, which was driven by the new status as an American Territory and the California Gold Rush. The gateway for traffic in the valley was created by the establishment of the Fort Tejon military post close to Grapevine Canyon and Castac Lake.
During the middle 1800ís, the valley began to grow as the result of many critical developments, such as ample rainfall during the 1880ís and the early 1890ís, which drew numerous farmers to the area, the completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad line during 1876, construction of the telegraph line between San Francisco and Los Angeles in 1860, the beginning of the Butterfield stagecoach line in 1858, cattle ranching, and gold mining in the Owens and Kerns Rivers. The ten year drought that started in 1894, which was the worst in the recorded history of southern California, forced numerous white settlers to abandon their homesteads and destroyed the regional economy. However, local farming returned during the early 1900ís, as the result of electricity and more modern irrigation techniques. The economy in the valley was also revived as the result of the completion of the aqueduct that spans some 233 miles between Los Angeles and the Owens Valley in1913. These days, the economic base in the Antelope Valley is supported by defense and aerospace industries, although the community retains some components of its agricultural past.
