In 2000, the population of the community of Antelope, California, was 36,421 people, which included approximately 1,655 families. The location of Antelope is close to Citrus Heights, just northeast of Sacramento. Some of the other nearby communities includes Rio Linda, Roseville, North Highlands, and Foothill Farms. During the late 1800ís, the community of Antelope was the primary settlement in the Center Township. Numerous railroad workers made their homes in the community and eventually remained permanently. However, these workers gradually left the region and Antelope was nothing more than simply another small community without much business.
The community of Antelope was changed forever in April of 1973. At the Roseville switch yard, a large explosion from aircraft bombs in a railroad car exploded. The train was traveling in Contra County on its way to Port Chicago with tanker cars containing liquefied petroleum and 7,000 aircraft bombs. As a result of the worry that the capitol dome had shifted due to the explosion, the state Capital building was closed because the strong blasts were felt in Sacramento. Although, Antelope and the surrounding areas suffered a considerable amount of damage, fortunately, nobody was killed as the result of the explosions. The explosion reduced the buildings that were left in the community to rubble.
The Union Pacific Railroad didnít own the Roseville Rail yard where the explosions took place in 1973. The new owners started remodeling the yard by moving some structures and the tracks. There were several unexploded bo0mbs discovered by the heavy equipment soon after this remodeling effort was started. New bombs were discovered and detonated onsite as soon as the area was excavated. Then, the undetonated bombs were sent to a weapons disposal company in the Bay area, when homeowners in surrounding areas started complaining that some bomb fragments from the explosions were being found in nearby homes. However, no new bombs have been found in the region since that time and the region has been deemed safe and clear from unexploded bombs.
During the late 1980ís, the community currently known as Antelope started out as a planned community. The community was primarily made up of apartments and single family homes. The region is well planned out and the majority of the homes are new, as the result of the relative newness of the neighborhood. In 1994, Antelope received recognition by the county as a community as well as its own postmark.
There are many different activities for visitors and their families to enjoy around Antelope and the surrounding areas. For a spookier experience, visitors and their families might want to visit the haunted Martinez House, located in nearby Sacramento, only 12 miles from Antelope. A man killed every living being in the Martinez House in a brutal mass murder, including the entire family, the grandchildren, the staff of the house, and even the cat. In 1976, the Martinez family purchased the and reportedly began seeing apparitions of a white and gray cat, children, a woman dressed in a flower print dress, and an Asian man wearing a white lab coat.
