CraneBoard Solid Core Siding is an insulated vinyl siding made by Westlake Royal Building Products and sold in its Exterior Portfolio line. Older literature and many contractors still call it "Crane" siding, but the current product name, warranty and literature come from Westlake Royal.
Each panel is a wood-grain vinyl face laminated to a contoured foam backer. The foam fills the space behind the panel, which is what separates it from standard hollow vinyl. For a deeper look at the product's history and construction, read our guide on what CraneBoard siding is.
We install CraneBoard alongside James Hardie fiber cement, LP SmartSide and standard vinyl, so we can recommend the material that fits your walls and budget rather than the one we happen to stock.
CraneBoard suits you if you want a wood look, added wall insulation and no painting. It is a poor fit if wildfire exposure is your main concern, because fiber cement handles flame far better.
Sacramento summers routinely hit triple digits and winters bring steady rain. Insulation at the wall and a drainage path behind the panel both earn their keep in that climate. Inland Bay Area cities such as Concord and Walnut Creek see similar summer heat.
These are manufacturer claims from the current brochure and the CraneBoard product page. They describe the product line, not a guaranteed result on your house.
Neopor insulation: a graphite-enhanced foam from BASF that Westlake Royal says gives up to 19% better R-value than regular foam insulation, depending on profile. It also says it is the only siding maker using Neopor.
Noise: up to 45% reduction in outside noise, which you notice most on busy streets.
Wind: designed to withstand winds up to 160 mph when installed to the manufacturer's instructions.
Chromatix color protection: infrared-reflecting pigments that limit heat buildup, plus mineral-based pigments to resist fading. Westlake Royal says every CraneBoard color uses it.
TXL Lamination: the process that bonds foam to vinyl so the two act as one panel and do not separate and sag.
Westlake Royal does not publish a single R-value on its product page because the figure changes by profile. Ask for the rated R-value of the exact profile in your quote before you compare it with another insulated siding. Our guide to insulated vinyl siding explains how those ratings work.
The foam backer slows heat moving through the wall, and it covers the wood studs, which carry heat faster than the insulated cavities between them. That lowers the load on your air conditioner on a 105-degree afternoon. It does not replace attic insulation or good windows, which move the needle more.
Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, so panels must hang loose on their nails with room at the ends. Sacramento's big day-to-night swings make correct nailing the difference between flat walls and wavy ones. This is where installer skill shows.
For rain, the Smart Track version of the foam backer has moisture-management ridges that let water drain and air move behind the panel. Smart Track is offered on the Double 7" (12' and 16'), Triple 6" (12') and Quad 4.5" Dutchlap panels. No siding is waterproof, so we flash every window, door and penetration and install a weather-resistant barrier underneath.
CraneBoard comes in four profiles: Double 7" lap, Triple 6" lap, Quad 4.5" Dutchlap and vertical Board & Batten. The current brochure lists 27 colors across standard, Premium and Expressions groups, from Aspen White and Pearl to Spruce Slate, Lighthouse Red and Espresso.
Not every color comes in every profile. Carbon, Indigo and Almost Midnight are Board & Batten only, and the Dutchlap panels skip the premium color groups. We bring physical samples to your home so you judge them in your own light, because colors on screen and in print vary. You can also see siding samples at our Rocklin showroom.
CraneBoard costs more than standard vinyl and usually less than painted fiber cement. The ranges below are typical installed prices per square foot of wall; your fixed-price proposal depends on wall area, tear-off, trim and any sheathing repair.
| Siding | Typical installed cost per sq ft | Fire behavior | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard vinyl | $4 to $7 | Combustible; depends on wall behind it | Wash only |
| CraneBoard insulated vinyl | $6 to $12 | Combustible; depends on wall behind it | Wash only |
| James Hardie fiber cement | $8 to $15 | Noncombustible | Repaint over time |
For resale, the 2025 Cost vs. Value Report puts vinyl siding replacement at about 97% of cost recouped nationally and fiber cement at about 114%. The report does not price insulated vinyl separately, so treat those as category figures. For standard vinyl options and pricing, see our vinyl siding installation page.
Fiber cement wins on fire resistance and resale. CraneBoard wins on built-in insulation, sound damping and never painting.
In a designated fire hazard zone, California's wildland-urban interface code requires exterior walls that are noncombustible, ignition-resistant or a fire-tested assembly. Vinyl's fire performance depends largely on the sheathing behind it, so in foothill areas such as El Dorado Hills and the Tahoe basin we usually point you to James Hardie fiber cement. We are a James Hardie Elite Contractor and received the 2025 James Hardie Service Excellence Award.
If you want a wood look with paint you control, LP SmartSide engineered wood is the third option we install, and we hold LP Master Level Preferred Contractor and LP Certified Installer status.
CraneBoard carries Westlake Royal's Life of the Home Limited Warranty. The current brochure describes it as a Double Lifetime Warranty that fully covers the first and second owner, where some competitors prorate coverage for a second owner.
It is a limited warranty, so it has conditions and exclusions, and installation outside the manufacturer's instructions can put coverage at risk. Read the warranty document before you sign, and register it after installation. GVD adds its own 10-year labor warranty on siding installation.
We remove your old siding, or install over it only where the walls are sound, flat and dry and the manufacturer's instructions and local code allow it. Rot, soft sheathing or wavy walls mean tear-off.
At your free in-home estimate we measure every wall and check the sheathing for rot.
You get a detailed fixed-price proposal with the profile, color, trim and any repair allowances spelled out.
Once materials arrive, our own crews strip the old siding, repair damaged sheathing and install a weather-resistant barrier and flashing.
We hang the CraneBoard panels with expansion gaps, then install trim and accessories.
We clean up and walk the job with you before we call it done.
A typical whole-house job takes 1 to 2 weeks once materials arrive. One dedicated project manager handles scheduling and communication from start to finish. When your city requires a siding permit, we pull it.
CraneBoard needs a yearly wash with a garden hose or soft brush and mild soapy water. You never paint, stain or recaulk the panels. Keep grills and heat sources away from the walls, because concentrated heat can warp any vinyl.
We are family-owned and hold California contractor license #989637, with general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Our own trained crews do the work.
Homeowners give us strong ratings across hundreds of verified reviews on Google, Yelp and other platforms, plus an A+ from the Better Business Bureau. You can read them on our testimonials page.
Combo, senior and military discounts are available, and financing through third-party lenders lets you spread the cost. Checking eligibility does not affect your credit score; approval, rates and terms depend on credit.
