About Auburn

The Nisenan group of the Maidu tribe inhabited several villages in the region currently known as Auburn, California until 1848, when gold was discovered in the area. The region wasnít dependent on a single crop, because the region was well known an abundance of food sources that were available year round as well as fishing, hunting, and other methods of staple food gathering, such as native fruits, herbs and grasses, roots, acorns and other nuts. The primary social activities were trading, ceremonies, and harvests.

Although grizzly bears were seldom hunted, the hunts consisted of small game such as rabbits, and larger game such as black bears, elk, antelope, and deer. The huntersí arsenals were full of many different kinds of tools. For fishing they used soaproot, poison from turkey mullein, and nets, while for small game they used blunted arrows, gorgehooks, snares, harpoons, and weirs. Snares and nets were also used to catch birds. Some game was intentionally not captured or killed, including birds such as condors, vultures, and owls.

During the summertime months, salt was gathered from a plant and from springs around Latrobe, Cool, and Lincoln and used in the preparation of food. Drying, roasting, or baking was the preferred method to prepare most game. Some berries were either made into a drink that was similar to cider or gathered for trade. Acorns were used to make flour, which could be used to make many daysí worth of soup or mush.

In the early to middle 1840ís three men named Theodore Sigard, John Bidwell, and John Fremont settled in the region. Another man named Claude Chana, who was a native of France, found deposits of gold in the soil while he was on his way to Coloma and camped along a ravine close to Old Town Auburn, in 1846.

A new mining camp in the region was born in 1849. This new mining camp went by many different names, such as Auburn Ravine, Woodís Dry Diggings, Rich Ravine, and North Fork Dry Diggings. In August of 1849, Auburn received it's official name. It is believed that the community was named after Auburn, New York.

Auburn was the last point for the wagons that were traveling from Sacramento as the result of the narrow trails and rough terrain. From there on, the use of pack mules was the only way that travel was only possible. It wasnít long before the miners started spending their winters in Auburn, and land everywhere was for sale. Whenever the water was lacking in the warmer months, the region was all but deserted. In order to find water to pan for gold, dedicated miners would haul dirt and soil great distances. It was possible to make $1,000 each day, with sufficient work.

Although the majority of the land in Auburn and the surrounding areas was inhabited by squatters. The population had increased to 1,500 people by 1850, and the original 27 counties had been established. Auburn was one of many communities that wanted to become the county seat and originally part of Sutter County. In 1853, Auburn became the county seat, although, originally the community of Oro won. Auburn, rightfully, received the title in 1853. Although it didnít last long, the year 1860, brought the incorporation of Auburn.

The community was relatively peaceful in 1850's. In 1855, the log jail that was located adjacent to the courthouse burned down. A two story brick structure replaced this jail in 1855. The transcontinental railroad arrived in Auburn during 1860's. The Placer and Nevada and the Central Pacific as well as the California Central Railroad competed for the privilege of laying tracks in the region. There was fierce fighting and sabotage wasnít uncommon. The victor in the railroad wars was the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1865, the railroad arrived in Auburn.

For the second time the year 1888 brought the incorporation of Auburn. By the early 1900ís the population of the community had increased to over 2,000 people. At this time, the residents were fighting among themselves re was because of the moving, expansion, and growth due to the railroad. Those who were in favor of new growth in the region attempted to identify their region as East Auburn after declaring their separation from the community. However, the US postal service wouldnít accept their new identity.

The building of the Auburn Court House started in 1894and was completed in 1898. It is one of only four remaining courthouses in central and northern California that has actually kept most of its ornamentation. The building is a cornerstone of the downtown region with beautiful Renaissance Revival and Classic Revival, which consists of a dome and a bracketed cornice.

The Pacific Portland Cement Company needed a way to connect the Southern Pacific Railroad line to their limestone quarry. The Mountain Quarry produced material that would later be used to refine sugar and manufacture cement. Originally known as The Mountain Quarry Cement Bridge, the construction of the No Hands Bridge was completed in 1912. At that time, this was the longest span of a bridge constructed from concrete in the world. During the 1940ís the bridge went out of service.

Auburn is the county seat of Placer County and has grown to include the new regions of commerce that were established during the early 1900ís as well as Old Town Auburn, which still exist. The population of Auburn is approximately 12,000 people. The majority of the historic Old Town Auburn region has been preserved.
