Anybody couldnít help but to notice the shining dome of the stunningly beautiful Placer County Courthouse who has traveled the Highway 80 corridor over the years. This public icon stands as a proud gatekeeper to the community of Auburn.
In 1960, this courthouse, which has a colorful history, much the same as other historical government buildings and courthouses throughout the historic gold country, was designated as a National Historic Site. As the result of its location close to established transportation routes, as well as its popularity, the location on which the courthouse was built attracted major activities by much of the early population, much the same as other early communities. The hilltop where the current courthouse is located was once the location for public hangings, as well as bear and bull fights, which were all very popular spectator sports during the early days of California.
Placer County was formed as one of many counties, and the community of Auburn was designated as the county seat by a California Legislative Act in 1851. During this time, a small structure made from canvas and of wood was built where the Honorable Judge Fitz Simmons held court hearings. A jail that was built from logs was located next to the jail. This wasnít an uncommon practice in the early days of California history because fledgling new communities didnít have much in the way of funds for infrastructure.
For the amount of $16,000, a man named Isaac Tidd was awarded the contract to construct a more permanent structure. In 1853, the new, two story wooden courthouse was completed and housed many different offices for the county as well as courtrooms. Up until 1855, when Auburn experienced its first major fire, the jail remained annexed the courthouse. Although, the jail was destroyed, the courthouse was saved. Later, a new jail that was separated from the courthouse was constructed.
The wooden two story courthouse and jail were renovated on many different occasions during the next four decades. However, as the result of the increasing activities of the recording offices, jails, and courts, the courthouse and jail eventually became obsolete.
A man named John Curtis was awarded the contract by Placer County in 1891, to construct a new three story masonry building. Although it was a large commitment of public funds for the time, the finished cost for the project came to an astounding $172,583.
In order to make way for the new structure, the old courthouse had to be relocated. Therefore, it was placed on rollers and relocated over to one side while the building of the new courthouse got underway. In 1897, the old wooden courthouse was finally demolished.
The new courthouse was built in sections and contained a hall of records and a jail. In 1894, the first section was completed, and the subsequent sections were completed and dedicated with much patriotic fanfare on July 4, 1898. This new courthouse was not only the new home to the court system but also to the Superintendent of Schools, the Tax Collector, Recorder, District Attorney, Auditor, Treasurer, Agricultural Commission, and Sheriffís office. For its day, it was really an integrated county facility.
The old replacement 300 lb. steel bell was placed in the new courthouse and served as a the community communication method, announcing the celebration of social events and holidays, a call to firefighters, and important court activities.
In 1908, at the entrance of the parking lot, the water fountain in the center of the planter was donated and in 1976 was relocated to that location. At a cost of $14,000, in 1946, the first elevator was installed.
The courthouse experienced additional growth requirements in the years leading up to WW II. After many years of radical post war growth in Placer County and California, in 1959 land was bought and facilities constructed, while more modern and larger facilities housed the ancillary non-court functions.
In 1960, the courthouse was declared a Historical site. Shortly thereafter, those who were left with having to deal with the overcrowding in the old courthouse proposed that the courthouse should be abandoned, and even demolished, as a means to relieve the county of growing modernization, preservation, and maintenance responsibilities.
Public opinion was very much against such a plan. In a compromise, the courthouse was only designated for judicial purposes, and the efforts to acquire local adjacent land and move other related government functions were accelerated. Between 1986 and 1990, the modern restoration of the old courthouse was conducted.
In 2009, additional parking facilities and cosmetic restoration and improvements were completed. The courthouse in Auburn still functions an annex court facility for Placer County to this day, although the new modern Bill Santucci Justice Center is currently open in Roseville.
The locals call the courthouse the old courthouse. However, the structure is still active and vital. An interesting and complete museum is also housed in the courthouse. The Museum Gallery that once housed the jail, offers visitors and their families an overview of the history of Placer County and is a great educational experience for both children and adults. Included is the original Sheriffís office, which has been restored complete with furnishings from the 1800ís, an amazing collection of gold in the lower vault inside the former treasurerís office, and a Native American art exhibit.
