Although the majority of the growth in the community has occurred during within the last 30 years, the community has a long history. In 1864, Rocklin was first known as a destination next to the transcontinental railroad. Granite mining started at about that same time. The year 1893 brought the incorporation of Rocklin during the heyday of the granite mining activity and the railroad. There were 22 quarries operating in Rocklin by 1910, and almost 2,000 train carloads of granite left the community to become part of the buildings in San Francisco and building of the state capitol in Sacramento in 1912.
Established by the Whitney family in 1855 was the Spring Valley Ranch, located just north of the center of Rocklin. The ranch that the Whitneyís owned included many different agricultural products as well as sheep. Currently considered the first developed in Rocklin, there was housing for 200 ranch hands and their families, barns, stables, granite bridges, and 25 miles crushed stone roads that were all constructed on this sprawling 30,000 acres over the years.
Eventually, the Whitney ranch was sold off to many different developmental interests and subdivided as the expansion of suburban communities to the northeast and Sacramento to resulted in the growth of the housing market in Rocklin between the late 1950ís and the early 1960ís. The Sunset Whitney neighborhood that is centered on a beautiful golf course was the result of this development.
The community of Rocklin understood the advantages of land that attracted industries, such as high tech companies as well as the lower cost of living to the area, starting in the 1980ís.
