The early white settlers of this Mexican land grant referred to as Rancho San Juan, that sprawled next to the American River, would have never guessed that their humble community would someday become a scenic and bustling suburb that offered some of the most desirable real estate in California. However, that is the story of founder Daniel Carmichael, who originally bought 2,000 acres of land, which became the busy section of businesses and homes that we currently know. There are many different aspects of life in Carmichael, from the shopping mall, churches, schools, and service stations that sprang up during the 1920ís to the current Fair Oaks Boulevard where there were wide open pastures and roadside stands that offered eggs, vegetables, and fruits in order to serve the growing population during that time. There was also the development of other important aspects of civic life, such as Crestview Shopping Center, community educational facilities, as well as the construction of new roads.
In 1885, a man named Daniel Carmichael arrived in California. Mr. Carmichael developed Carmichael Colony Number One in 1909, which was 2,000 acres of what was once part of the Mexican Land grant of Rancho San Juan. Later, Mr. Carmichael purchased another 1,000 acres of land, which was previously part of the Mexican Land grant of Rancho Del Paso. Mr. Carmichael named this region Carmichael Colony Number Two. This area bordered what is currently known as Sutter Avenue on the north, with the southern boundary being Arden Way, Walnut Avenue on the west, and the first colony on the east.
