About Lakeport

Lakeport, California is located 125 miles northwest of Sacramento and is the county seat of the County of Lake and is an incorporated city in California. According to the 2000 census the population of Lakeport was 4,820 people, which is down from the population according to the 2010 census of some 4,753. Tuckertown, Stony Point, and Forbestown are all former names of Lakeport.

Several thousand years ago Native Indians settled in Lakeport A subtribe of the Pomo Indians known as the Kabe-napos lived in this area within their primary village when the first pioneers arrived. The name their village was Kaci-Badon. In 1855, the initial business was established in Lakeport. Goods were traded to the Native Indians for their baskets and other wares. A man whose name was Johnson ran the businesses. However, he didn’t have a store location. Dr. Boynton built the first shop in the Lakeport area.

A shop in the Lakeport area was established by two men named James Parrish and William Forbes. These men were a wagon maker and a blacksmith. Mr. Forbes was also a pioneer undertaker. It was the land grant Mr. Forbes bestowed on the county and this investment that earned Lakeport its first name of Forbestown.

In 1858 William Forbes arrived in this region. He bought some 160 acres to build his farm and home. When the county was examined the land became the local county seat. Mr. Forbes offered some 40 acres of his land property that would become the county office. The settlement was names Forbes as a way of thanking Mr. Forbes for his generosity. There are many landmarks that still bear the names of the late although the community no longer bears his name.

The Names of Forbestown was formally changes to Lakeport in 1861. Some locations still bear the Forbes name, such as Forbes Street and Forbes Creek. The Bloody Island Massacre was led by a man named Captain Nathaniel Lyon, in 1850. Captain Lyon later died while fighting in the Civil for the Union.

In thus location, in 1858 the first post office, known as the Big Valley, was established. In 1862 the post office was renamed to Lakeport. In 1861 the first courthouse in Lakeport was constructed from wood. In 1867, the building was destroyed by fire under suspicious circumstances.

In 1884, the Cache Dam was constructed. Some four years later, the locals destroyed the mills that the dam helped to operate. After were waters diverted by the dam most of the Anderson Ranch and the lower lake were flooded. f Lower Lake and Anderson Ranch.

Black Bart robbed the stage that was running between Cloverdale and Lakeport in 1882. More than 450 Immigrants from China were employed to work in the quicksilver mines in the region. A man named William Jones was hanged at the Lakeport jail. Mr. Jones was the only Caucasian man ever hanged by the county legally. The year 1888 brought the incorporation of Lakeport. For almost 50 years, Lakeport was the only incorporated city in Lake County.

Most of the faults were on Cobb Mountain that runs southeasterly to the Sothern County Line as others in the Hopland region. In the Southeastern portion of the County, there are also significant earthquake faults. Within the area around of Jackson, there are also active faults, which include the San Andreas Fault which is located some 30 miles to the west, as well as the Healdsburg Fault which located some 15 miles to the west. These faults have been responsible for moderate to major earthquakes in the past. The maximum earthquake magnitudes that are creditable include 8.25 for the San Andreas fault and 6.75 the Healdsburg fault.

Potentially there is an active rupture zone that has lasted for 2,000,000 years in the past. This rupture zone is located immediately east of the City limits of Lakeport and runs adjacent and parallel to the shoreline of Clear Lake. Within the past two centuries no major earthquakes that caused significant damage have happened next to any faults that are in Lake County that include Big Valley fault, which is located next to the eastern City boundaries of Lakeport. Recent faulting is indicated, geologically, but by the apparent movement of quaternary earth materials next to the Big Valley fault.

The San Francisco earthquake in 1906 was the largest earthquake to affect the City of Lakeport with a magnitude of 8.3. The damage in Lakeport overall was comparatively minor and limited generally to the fall of decorative chimneys and masonry.

The city of Lakeport depends on wells for most of is potable water supply. In periods of high rainfall, flooding from Forbes Creek, Scotts Creek and Clear Lake has historically caused property damage.
