The Roseville Historical Society reported that, originally the community that eventually came to be known as Roseville was known as Griders. The tracks for the California Central Railroad were laid eastwards from Sacramento in 1864 , and as crossed the small California Pacific Railroad line they called the location Junction. Eventually, Junction came to be called Roseville. The year 1909 brought the incorporation of Roseville as a city and the Pacific Southern Railroad relocated facilities from to Roseville from Rocklin. Roseville constructed over 100 buildings including what became the largest plant to manufacture ice in the world in 1913 known as Fruit Express Building. A era of continued expansion followed.
By 1929, the railroad was employing as many as 1,225 people out of a population of only 6,445 people and for numerous years the community of Roseville remained a railroad community. The railroad yards became every increasingly busy with the onset of WW II, and there was continued prosperity during the building boom after the war. During the 1950ís, however, the nature of community of Roseville changed considerable.
The railroad converted its all steam engine fleet by the 1960ís although in the 1950s the railroad continued to upgrade and expand. However, with the development of the national highway system all throughout the Unites States as well as the continued use of air travel, the railroads started to become used less and less. Therefore, the expansion of the community of Roseville started to branch out into other sectors of employment, although the railroad still remains and remained a primary employer. In 1950, the Washington Boulevard railroad underpass, known then as the Seawell, was constructed, which was another important change to the community of Roseville in this period of time. This meant that the residents were no longer traveling north of the tracks through the business districts in Roseville, although it did improve the ability of the residents to travel from one side of the tracks to the other. In 1956, the population of Roseville shifted to what was eventually called East Roseville from the downtown area when Interstate 80 was completed. Gradually, the old downtown area fell into
As homes, major retailers, and shopping malls were built all over the community, there was continued population growth throughout Roseville in the following years. In 1929, the population of Roseville increased 6,425 people and by 1985 the population of Roseville had increased to 29,988 people. The population of Roseville was 44,685 people in 1990 and by 2000 the population of Roseville was 74,234. In 2014, the population is 126,956 people. Up until 1985 the growth rate was rather modest but quickly caught up in the following years. Some of this growth has been fueled by the location of major employers, including Hewlett Packard in 1979, and NEC in 1983.
The community of Roseville has grown from its small town beginnings to what these days is considered a primary urban city, although the character of Roseville has changed over the years. Some of its historic beginnings have been retained. Although the Union Pacific Railroad remains the sixth largest employer in the region, Roseville is no longer considered to be a railroad community.
