By population Davis is the 122nd largest city in California and the largest city in Yolo County. White settlers from Europe claimed land in this region during the 1840ís. Mexico gave an enormous land grant to a man named William Wolfskill that was comprised of an area that ranged from Vacaville to almost South Davis. Mr. Wolfskill established his Rancho Rio de los Putos with this granted land. Two men named J Pena and J. Vaca were granted much of that same land in error in 1843. They established their own Rancho Los Putos since there was enough land for everybody. It wasnít until several years later that the problem of who owned exactly what was cleared up.
In 1868, the community of Davis was established. Originally, the community was called Davisville in honor of a prominent local farmer named Jerome Davis.
