Placerville, California has been previously named Old Dry Diggins and Hangtown. The history of the community is in mining and at one time had an infamous reputation for vigilante justice by hanging criminals and outlaws.
In 1848, a gold mining camp that was located on Hangtown Creek was established and called Old Dry Diggins. Millions of dollars in gold had been taken from the close by hills and ravines. Some $25 million dollars in placer gold alone. Had been mined, in 1910 from claims in Placerville. This didn’t include the money made from the quartz mining operations that were also ongoing. The year 1854 brought the official incorporation of Placerville as a town. The settlement was the third largest town in California at the time. Currently, Placerville is the county seat for the County of El Dorado. Placerville was a stopover place on the trail for the Pony Express in 1860.
Placerville not only served as an important hub for mining supplies as well as the location for the Comstock Lode from Nevada in addition to being the center for mining. Some of the most renowned men who contributed to the history of Placerville include Edwin Markham, Philip Armour, Levi Strauss, Leland Standford, Mark Hopkins, and John Studebaker. It wasn’t long before the gold soon started waning and many of the gold miners relocated to better pickings, much the same as other mining settlements. However, in 1859, when silver was discovered at the Comstock Lode in Nevada, Placerville regained new life as a hub for transportation. The fact is that between 1859 and 1866, the Placerville-Carson Road experienced the greatest period of staging and freighting by horse-drawn wagons ever known.
However, that wouldn’t last either. As the result of a dispute with the railroad the population once again started moving on and Placerville became a ghost town. The same fate was also suffered by numerous other mining camps. The only places remaining included Murderer’s Bar, Georgia Slide, and Bottle Hill. However, Placerville was determined to survive, and turned to light manufacturing, agriculture, and lumber to make its comeback. The year 1900 brought the reincorporation of Placerville.
