El Cerrito, California makes up a portion of the Bay area in San Francisco and is located in the County of Contra Costa. According the census that was taken in 2010, the population of El Cerrito was some 23,549 people. There were some 5,971 families, 10,208 households, and 1,500 people in El Cerrito, which is in accordance with the census that was taken in 2000. Refugees after the San Francisco fire and earthquake in 1906 established El Cerrito. The year 1917 brought the incorporation of El Cerrito. According to the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report of 2013, the top 20 employers in EL Cerrito include such businesses as Honda of El Cerrito, Pastime ACE Hardware, Lucky Stores, the city of El Cerrito, and the West Contra Costa Unified School District.
In 1909, a post office was opened in the small community and the refugee camp, which was named Rust, in honor of a man named Wilhelm Rust, who was also the first postmaster. The residents of the small village didn’t like the name so in 1916, they renamed the village El Cerrito, which in Spanish means little knoll or little hills in reference to the many small hills in the village. The year 1917 brought the incorporation of El Cerrito as a village, which had a population of some 1,500 people.
El Cerrito has a total land mass area of some 3.7 square miles, with no water according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The elevation of El Cerrito of some 69 feet. El Cerrito is situated on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay. The hilly regions of El Cerrito provide views of the Golden Gate bridge as well as its adjoining community. El Cerrito is also situated next to the close by I-580 and I-80. El Cerrito is bounded on the east by Wildcat Canyon Regional Park, on the north by East Richmond Heights, on the west by the Richmond Annex, and on the south by Kensington and Albany. San Pablo is the main retail and commercial corridor of El Cerrito, and the Avenue extends the complete length of El Cerrito. However, there is a section in which the commerce on the west side of the avenue are really in Richmond Annex, although they have a postal address for El Cerrito.
El Cerrito is home to a large vehicle-oriented shopping mall known as El Cerrito Plaza. The plaza was initially constructed during the 1950’s. Also, there is a restored two-screen regional theater that offers a complete dining menu, wine, and beer known as the Cerrito Theater. The shopping center is bordered by other retail and commercial enterprises on Fairmount Avenue and San Pablo Avenue.

El Cerrito is the home of Arhoolie Records, which is a portion of the Smithsonian Institution located in the Richmond Annex. The population of El Cerrito was some 23,549 residents according to the census that was taken in 2010. The population density of El Cerrito was some 6,385.3 people for each per square mile. In 2010 the racial nature of El Cerrito was 4.6% of the population 0r 1,079 people from other races, 6.5% of the population or 1,525 people from two or more races, 11.1% of the population or 2,621 people from Latino or Hispanic of any race, 0.2% of the population or 37 people who are Pacific Islanders, 0.5% of the population or 107 people who are American Indian, 7.7% of the population or 1,819 people who are African American, 27.3% of the population or 6,439 people who are Asian, and 53.3% of the population or 12,543 people who are White.
The census also indicated that 99.6% of the population or some 23,456 persons resided households, while 0.2% of the population or some 48 persons resided in noninstitutionalized group quarters, and 0.2% of the population or some 45 persons were institutionalized.
