About Rocklin

In Rocklin, California the Post Office was relocated to the northeastern corner of Rocklin Road and Pacific Street from the southern end of the Trott Hotel building. It was ten relocated to the location of the current Frostie Store. Next, for a short while, the Post Office was again relocated to the back of the Finn Hall, while the current building was being constructed.

At the turn of the century, a woman named Lena Dias was the Postmistress. Then, until the late 1920’s, a man named Mr. Hackett was the Postmaster and then a woman named Alice West was the Postmistress, followed by the current Postmaster named Phillip Freer.

In 1866, the Rocklin School District was established. The first school teacher was a woman named Ellen Hinckley. A man named John Ertle was a participate in the first board of trustees. The location on Bolton Place was where the first school was constructed. This was on 4th Street in the area of the current Little League ball park is located. There were some 139 students in 1879. On the western side of Pacific Street between Pine Street and Oak Street a new two-story school building was constructed in 1886. This is also the location of the current surplus yard.

The single-story wooden school building that was constructed on the southernmost end of the school grounds was utilized for the first three grades. The brick school house that fronted Pacific Street was utilized until 1952 when the new schoolhouse was being used at Racetrack Road on Meyers Street after being constructed in 1922.

A brick works company was operating in 1868 in Rocklin in order to supply a rapidly growing community. The 1870 census reported some 542 people who were classified as Native-born, and some 362 people who were classified as and Foreign-born. The population was also broken down as one Indian, two Black, 32 Chinese, and 507 White.

Since this region was the winter home of a large Indian tribe, the Indians must not have been counted. These Indians followed the ridges and the rivers high up into the Sierra Nevada mountains, which are located to the east, for the summer and returned to this region for the winter. Just east of Rocklin, close to the Secret Ravine Creek, they had a relatively large burial ground.

During the late 1870’s, the last of the local Indians relocated their camp food to the middle of the settlement on the lot that is bounded by High Street, San Francisco Street, Pine Street, and Oak Street. The end of the Indian tribes in Rocklin is marked by the burning of their camp food.

The Central Pacific railroad employed some 14,000 Chinese people. In 1869, these Chinese relocated to many different regions looking for employment when the Railroad was completed. A small group of Chinese people relocated to the Rocklin region to raise vegetables to sell to the residents of the local area as well as to mine for gold. On the Secret Ravine Creek in the China Gardens in Rocklin, several different kinds of vegetables were raised.

Some of the groups of Chinese also resides in the region located just back of the roundhouse which, prior to 1876, was known as Chinatown. Close to Rocklin, a group of Chinese people murdered three people and this infuriated the residents in the adjacent region as well as in Rocklin. Therefore, the residents assembled and drove all of the Chinese people out of the Penryn, Loomis, Rocklin, and Roseville areas. For a number of years, the year 1876 marked the end of the Chinese people in this region.

There isn’t any large underground supply of water that is reliable during the dry years, because Rocklin is located on a cap of granite. Therefore, the Central Pacific developed a reservoir for a more consistent supply of water.

Tank cars of mountain water from the Emigrant Gap region was brought into Rocklin and were parked on the spur track to enable the Rocklin residents’ access to clear, clean water for home use. Soon, Rocklin became known as being a healthy place to live as the result of so little illness because of the usage of this mountain water. Until the railroad was rerouted through Roseville in 1908, this water supply was used constantly.

The roundhouse burned to the ground and destroyed some 10 tenders and locomotives in 1873. Slowly, it was slowly rebuilt although this time they made it more fireproof by using granite for the walls of the roundhouse.

The Spring Valley Ranch grew at the same rate as Rocklin grew. A man named Joel Whitney, who was an amazing pioneer in Rocklin and was dead broke and only 17 years old in 1852 when he passed through Rocklin on his way to the Placer gold fields. While in the lower foothills, he stopped to camp out and hunt, believing that someday he would return to claim the region for himself.
