A man named Guillermo Castro was rewarded for his previous civil and military service by Mexican Governor MichaeltoreÒo in 1843, who granted him some 27,000 acres of canyons, hills, and flatlands known as El Rancho San Lorenzo, and currently known as Castro and Hayward Valley. Where the historic Hayward City Hall is currently located is where Castro built an adobe house. Not far from the location of the Hayward Region Historical Museum, and the current location of the post office and library was the location of Castroís corrals. On the location that surrounded his rodeo plaza and rancho adobe, Don Castro had laid out the four blocks for the new community of San Lorenzo in 1852. He started selling off parcels of land and donated land for public places and schools.
A man named William Hayward arrived at El Rancho San Lorenzo during the time of the gold rush in 1851 as squatted on some land in Palomares Canyon. Mr. Hayward purchased 40 acres of land at the invitation of Don Guillermo in 1852 that spanned what is currently known as the downtown Hayward region. He son opened a dairy farm, a hostelry, a post office, and a general trading store. Sometime later Mr. Hayward became the Roadmaster of Eden Township, County Supervisor, Justice of the peace, and Post Master. Mr. Hayward and Rachel, who was his second wife, also opened one of the finest resorts in the region, known as Haywardís Hotel.
As the result of the famous Hayward Hotel, many residents called the new community Haywardís or Haywardís Place, even Don Castro had called the community what is currently known as downtown Hayward San Lorenzo. As a result of a clerical error, he community was officially named Hayward in 1860, when the post office was opened. The year 1876 brought the incorporation of the community Town of Haywards. The population of the new community was 1,100 people. The s in Haywards was removed in 1894, and the status of the community was officially changed to the City of Hayward in 1928.

The historic Castro Adobe, the majority of the businesses, the Edmonson warehouses as well as the railroad station were demolished as the result of a strong earthquake in 1868. The earthquake fault that was responsible for the abundance of water and springs that once drew the early settlers to the downtown area continued to play a major role in the history of Hayward.
