The region located just west of Shingle Springs currently known as Cameron Park, California remained rather underdeveloped until the late 1950’s. The property was mainly being used for the raising of livestock. However, the region still played an important role in the early history of El Dorado County.
It wasn’t long before discovery of gold in Coloma, that many settlers turned minors arrived in this region with hopes of making their fortune in some of the many small ravines and streams. Soon, these Argonauts were followed by businessmen and merchants in addition to cattleman and farmers who would settle in this region.
Soon the road currently known as the Green Valley Road and quickly became the major route between the mines in and close to Coloma, and the steamboat docks in Sacramento, while what is currently known as Highway 50, became the primary route between the immigrant trail, Diamond Springs, Placerville and Sacramento. In 1850, Willian and Steven Elliot constructed the Green Valley Road. Much the same as the large houses during the era of the gold, and the lumber for this house arrived from the East Coast of the U.S. In 1858, a man named Frederick Engesser, who was in the hauling business, bought the house that was also the home of local post office. The Pony Express, which short-lived, carried the mail on this route part of the time, and stopped to change horses just west at the Pleasant Grove House. It is commonly believed that this Green Valley Road route that ran through Highway 50 next to an alignment that approximated Cameron Park Drive. In search of gold, a Scotsman whose name was James Skinner arrived in California. Sometime later Mr. Skinner bought some land in the Cameron Park region and established a winery and a vineyard. It has been said that he produced approximately 15,000 gallons of vinegar and wine in his winery, which is located both south and north of Green Valley Road on the easternmost side of Cameron Park Drive.
In 1865 the tracks of the Sacramento and Placerville and Valley Railroad reached the close by settlement of Shingle Springs. The railroad brought hundreds of tons of freight daily, the majority of this freight was loaded onto wagons that would be drawn by large team and became what is currently known Highway 50, and to the silver mines of the Comstock over the Sierra Nevada close to Virginia City. The railroad, which became a part of the large Southern Pacific conglomerate in 1888, would arrive in Placerville, and eventually to the end of the line. However, there are maps that shows that it reaches Lake Tahoe via a tunnel through the Sierra Nevada.
During the late 1860’s, the construction of the transcontinental railroad miles to the north, two things happened that effected this region. One, the freight traffic on the roads was reduced to a practically nothing and, two, the railroad, as a part of the agreement to build the transcontinental line. The mines stopped producing gold by the late 1800’s. The population of the region had decreased considerable and there was very little traffic next to Green Valley Road and would come to be known as Highway 50. A considerable amount of the property was now in control of only a few owners, which included the Southern Pacific Railroad, Morrison, Rust, Engesser, and Meder.
A man named Robert L. Cameron bought many blocks of the land during the late 1950’s. There were units of small lots that had been developed north of Highway 50 and a unit of 5-acre parcels to the south of the highway by 1861. Sometime later the golf course was completed, which was followed by the airport and, to the south, the Red Coach Inn, currently known as Sam’s Town, which was demolished and replaced by Food 4 Less. A rather unique subdivision was established on property that had once been James Skinner’s vineyard, n conjunction with the developed of the Cameron Park Airport. Having extra wide streets with utilities underground, and shortened street signs, Air Park Estates was one of the first aviation-residential integrated subdivisions in California. This permitted the integrated use of the streets by private vehicles and aircraft and the construction of private hangers on residential properties. This successfully made it the model for other similar developments. The development of Cameron Park in the late 1960’s, as the result of declining economic conditions in the Sacramento region that included a major layoff at Aerojet. Then the economy started to recover, Dorado Estates developed a master plan for Cameron Park which became integrated into the Cameron Park Area Plan in 1981 and sometime later, into the County’s General Plans.
While not all of the lots have been built upon, most of the planned housing of Cameron Park have been developed. It is a community of widely mixed uses, which was intended, and provides several economic levels of housing, included minor and major shopping centers and many different recreation areas for its residents
