One of the most distinctive landmarks is the Lower Lake Stone Jail. The jail is located in Lower lake a tenth of a mile south of highways 53 and 29 at 16118 Main Street. To become designated as a Historical Landmark in California the structure or location must meet specific criteria associated with California history.
In 1895 in Los Angeles this process started when a group of residents from the Landmarks Club wanted to preserve the Spanish Missions in California. In 1876 a man named Steven Nicolai who was a stone mason with a local business and gathered materials from a close by quarry, built the Lower Lake Stone Jail. His construction partners were John and Theodore and Copsey.
The first official historian in Lake County was a man named Henry Mauldin. According to his notes the Copsey brothers were so happy that they had finished their hard work on the jail, decided to celebrate their accomplishment by having some drinks at the local saloon. However, it wasn’t long before the brothers became so boisterous that they were sent to the jail's as the very first lodgers!
Then, the Copsey brothers realized that they had forgotten one key component of the jail's construction: They didn’t secure the roof to the structure. Therefore, escaped by raising the roof and got out. Although the population of lower Lake was a mere 1,000 people there was still need for a jail in Lower Lake.
This was when mercury or quicksilver, mining was booming all across Lake County. Lake County attracted a great workforce and was gaining in popularity, especially with the advent of the Sulphur Bank Mine.
The men would feel the need to blow off steam by visiting the local saloons, after a hard day at the mines. The rowdiest were thrown in the little clinker. It must have been quite a rustic to be locked up in the Lower lake Jail, since there was no outhouse in the jail.
Lower Lake has a great future and a rich history. It has all the amenities of a big city with the atmosphere of a small town. It is a wonderful place to live, work, play, and raise a family. There are many activities for an entire to enjoy.
