For almost 3,500 years, a 2,200 acre peninsula, currently known as Alameda, was home of the Miwok Indians. A man named Luis Peralta received 35 square miles of area that comprised parts of Alameda, Piedmont, Oakland, Albany, Berkeley, and El Cerrito as part of an 1820 land grant that was later divided among his four surviving sons. The son named Antonio Maria Peralta received much of Oakland and all of Alameda.
Arriving via Panama, in 1850 a man named William Worthington Chipman arrived in San Francisco. Mr. Chipman became friends and partners with a man named Gideon Aughinbaugh fir the next 23 years. In 1851 Antonio Peralta sold the two men 160 acres, which was called the Encinal 14,000. There were three separate communities in this purchase known as Woodstock, the Estuary, and Old Alameda. The diverse, settlers included, Germans, Scandinavians, Japanese, Chinese, Spaniards, Portuguese, and Italians. They came to work on the Alaska Packers fleet, to work as gardeners and handymen, to build the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, to be servants to the wealthy, and to farm. The residents named the community Alameda in 1853, and under one charter, incorporated three communities by 1872.
The first high school was constructed in 1874 and the beginning of the project that separated Oakland from the peninsula was completed in 1902. In 1872, a wooden cantilever bridge was built that connected the 30 residents of Bay Farm Island to 300 acres at high tide but 1,800 acres at low tide. In 1871, the first bridge across the Estuary at Webster Street was built and in 1900 was replaced again in 1926 was replaced by the Posey Tube. Ferry and rail service played a crucial role in development. The Alameda Pier was constructed in 1884. Later this pier became the transportation connection for rail to ferries when the Southern and Central railroads merged in 1894. During WW I, shipbuilding started in earnest by the Todd, Bethlehem Steel, and Moore companies.
A destination for sporting events and recreational activities, resorts next to the coast line offered saloons with Terrace Baths, ballrooms, huge amusement centers, and large swimming pools, which all opened during the 1870ís. In 1893, Cottage Baths had clientele that included celebrities such as Jack London, Robert Louis Stevenson, Al Jolson, and Ethel Barrymore. The first woman to swim across the San Francisco Bay in three hours was named Nell Schmidt, and she changed swimsuit fashion forever. In the 1880ís, the Neptune Gardens was the largest resort in the area, and in 1915, became famous for attracting thousands on weekends for special events that included boxing matches between Jim Corbett and John L. Sullivan. Between 1917 and 1939, the resort became known as the Coney Island of the West. It closed partially because of the new Golden Gate and Bay bridges, where later the increase in the use of the automobile resulted in the end of the local train and ferry services.
In 1928, the first passenger airport on the west end was opened. For commercial crossings across the Pacific Ocean, Pan American Airways operated the China Clippers. The west end of Alameda was deeded the US Government a 100 acre Army Base known as Benton Field, and another deed of 929 acres of submerged land and tideland for one dollar in 1935. From this point on, Alameda became known as a Navy town. In 1940, the Alameda Naval Air Station was officially opened. The airfield operated for 56 years providing of continuous support of the fleet. The population on the area almost doubled overnight with the onset of WW II. These days, the population of the diverse community is 76,000, located on 23 square miles.
The community of Alameda can be favorably compared to some of the best places to live in America, according to Money Magazine. In a large part, this is the result of the small town feel of this community on the Bay Area Island. In addition, the community offers better than average weather, excellent air quality, over twice the number of libraries and restaurants as compared to the average of the best places to live, a large number of educational institutions located close by, as well as a high median family income.
The oldest municipal utility in the state but is also one of the most advanced when it comes to providing renewable and clean power is the AMP (Alameda Municipal Power). In 2010, AMP was honored with the Energy Innovator Award by the American Public Power Association. AMP has a power combination that is envied by communities all over the world.
The main reason that the community of Alameda has one of the lowest greenhouse gas emission rate per individual in the state and lowest in Alameda County is that over 80% of the power provided to businesses and residents is from renewable and clean sources. AMP uses more renewable power, as defined by the California Energy Commission, than all of the other utilities in California. AMP is a member of the Northern California Power Agency and serves the entire community of Alameda.
