About Angels Camp

In 1849, the gold rush in California resulted in much of the culture and history of Angels Camp, California. Many of the pioneers, turned minors traveled from all over the world in hopes of making their fortune. These pioneers and left behind a history of entrepreneurship and a culture of adventure. Angele’s Camp is also the home of the Angels Camp Museum and Carriage House that has more than three acres of fascinating exhibits.

During the gold rush of 1848, a shopkeeper from Rhode Island named Henry Angel opened a trading post in the camp. He is the namesake of Angels Camp. There are many stories of settlers making their fortune in many of the extraordinary settlements next to Historic Highway 49. Angels Camp is no different. For instance, a vein of quartz bearing gold located accidentally by a man with the unique name of Bennager Raspberry. One afternoon, he was out hunting close to Angels Camp. Mr. Raspberry decided to take a break to clean his gun. When he did his ramrod got stuck in the barrel. He figured that shooting his gun was the best way to free the stuck ramrod. He aimed the at a squirrel that was close by but missed the squirrel. However, he sent the ramrod into the bushes. After removing the ramrod, he realized that there was a small piece of quartz that was rich with gold. He managed to excavate about $700 worth of gold that afternoon using only his ramrod for a shovel. Being better prepared, the next day, he extracted approximately $2,000 worth of gold and the third day he extracted $7,000 worth of gold.

A young man named Mark Twain was residing in a small cabin at the time late 1865, located on a place named Jackass Hill. In a hotel bar Mt. Twain overheard a story, and later wrote what became the famous The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. This literary work is what made Mark Twain a household name. But it wasn’t until 1928 that the Boosters Club in Angels Camp Club held the first celebration honoring the initial paving of Main Street.

American Indians considered this region sacred for the ancient Giant Sequoias, for Thousands of years. These ancient Giant Sequoias are situated in the Calaveras Big Trees State Park, which was a secret that was later discovered by a man name A.T. Dowd, who travelled across the grove in 1850. It wasn’t long before Mr. Dowd shared this discovery with the rest of the world, and the Mammoth Grove Hotel was constructed to permit travelers the opportunity to stay and enjoy this incredible attraction.

Main Street was rebuilt in stone after a devastating fire destroyed much of the settlement in 1855. What is currently there today is nearly the exact same as it was back then. For the pioneers turned miners, the main quartz vein ran between Angels Camp and southernmost Altaville as well as next to Main Street. These mines were named the Stickle, the Utica, the Lightner, the Angles, and the Sultana. Miners pushed hand cars filled with Ore between the mills and the mines. Between the 1880’s and the 1890’s there was a crash of more than 200 stamps during the peak mining period.

There are more than a few stories about when the last stamp mill quit operating and the settlement became so quiet that the people couldn’t sleep. The approximate gross recovery of gold from these five between 1886 and 1910 was nearly $20 million. Angels Creek ran chalky white from the waste from the mills.

In 1865, one man named Samuel Clemens inspired much of the culture and history of Angels Camp. Mr. Clemens, escaped from jail and debt after working on newspapers in Virginia City and San Francisco. He arrived and stayed with his good friend named Jim Gillis who was working a mining claim. Although these conditions were rather harsh, Mr. Clemens kept going by writing about his experiences. On one occasion that was rather notable Mr. Clemens heard a certain story at the hotel in Angels Camp about a man who bragged about how far his frog would jump. Another leman was irritated by his continuous boasting in the saloon he placed a bet with man that he would find a frog that could jump further. He filled the first frog with buckshot to ensure his success.

As the result of this somewhat unlikely story inspired Samuel Clemens to write The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. This was his first short tale using the pen name of mark Twain. This tale was penned in vernacular, and contained a considerable amount of local color which made it a near instant success, which inspired an annual Jumping Frog Jubilee and propelled Twain to international fame.

The State Park System took over the protection of two stands of ancient Redwood trees in 1950. On either side of the Stanislaus River This park covers about six thousand acres of forest. These days, the park provides for biking, hiking, and camping for those people who want to fully enjoy this natural wonder.
