Both visitors and locals alike can’t refute the charm of these Gold Rush, Old-West towns regardless if they are here for boutique shopping, wine tasting, or fine dining. They are absolutely simply charming, and each has its own unique architecture, ambience, and history.
The history of Angels Camp is tangible in the old movie theater, hotels, and old store fronts. It’s almost like walking onto the set of a Western, but instead of dance hall girls and gun fights, there are delicious foods, extensive shopping, and friendly wine tasting. However, the history is still readily available. The influence that Mark Twain had on the community is found in the posters of store fronts that offer little chunks of interesting information and by stopping at the Angels Camp and Carriage House, Museum that is located just north of the historic downtown, there are 3-acres of exhibits on the history of Angels Camp.
Along the tree-lined Murphy street, there is fine dining, boutique shops, and wine tasting rooms none of which overpowers the historic origins of Angles Camp. That is a portion of the charm of this popular destination. Here, there are numerous reminders about the history in the Murphys Saloon and Hotel, which has been operating continuously since the days if the Gold Rush, in addition to all of the restaurants, galleries, and boutiques that are housed in these Victorian era buildings. Free, guided tours are available on Saturday mornings, that demonstrate the history of Murphys.

There are some of the reasons that this community compresses so much historic charm into such a small space.
This is also the location of the Mokelumne History Society, which features an incredible collection of photographs by Edith Ervine, who was a local school teacher who resided in the region from the late 1800’s until the early 1900’s. As a talented amateur photographer, she was able to capture some intriguing photographs during those times in the region. However, she was on an ideal location just after the 1906 Great San Francisco Earthquake and capturing some of the most iconic photographs of the aftermath, which is what she is best known for.
The historic Hotel Leger, which is the most iconic landmark in all of Mokelumne Hill. The historic Hotel Leger has been in operation since the 1800’s, and being in the center of the community, this legendary historic landmark is a sight to behold, and is reportedly haunted. It offers live music, a pool table, a backyard patio, a historic restaurant, and an excellent old saloon.
Angels Camp also offers some seriously good wine. Praised as a snob-free the wine tasting zone, is part of the promising wine region in the Sierra Foothills.
