The community of Grass Valley, California is located at about 2,500 feet in elevation in the westernmost foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Nevada County. This historic northern Gold Country community is also located 175 miles northeast of San Joes, 90 miles west of Reno, 64 miles from the Sacramento International Airport, and 75 miles by automobile from the state capitol in Sacramento.
The original name of Grass Valley was Boston Ravine, which was officially named Centerville. Nevada City and Grass Valley both date back to the days of the California Gold Rush. For reasons that remain unknown, in 1851, when the post office was established the name of the community was changed to Grass Valley the following year. The year 1860 brought the incorporation of Grass Valley as a town.
Two of the riches mines in California are the North Star Mine and the Empire Mine, both of which are located in Grass Valley. There were numerous miners from Cornwall England who came to settle in Grass Valley. Since the same skills were required for deep or hardrock gold mining, they were attracted to the gold fields in California. Many of these gold miners specialized in pumping the water out of very deep mining shafts. As large alluvial deposits started to be exploited somewhere else, this followed the disastrous fall in the price of tin.
