Butte Store, which is California Landmark #39 is located right off Highway-49 between Mokelumne Hill and Jackson. It is the only building remaining in the community of Butte City, which was a prosperous mining settlement during the 1850’s. IN 1857, it was constructed with Italian stone mason. The building served as a post office and general store. As early as 1854 a man named Xavier Benoist was operating a bakery and a store in this building. Sometime later a man named Ginocchio had a merchandise business in the building.
