About Jackson

At one time the city of Jackson, California came to be known as Botilleas. Chilean and Mexican miners who were impressed with the number of bottles that were dropped into the spring that was a watering hole for traveling gave the settlement that name. The site of the original well has been memorialized with a plaque it the foot of main Street behind the national Hotel. There are many of these plaques that adorn the sidewalks through this historic area for visitors and their families to experience.

When visitors and their families first arrive in Jackson, they simply can't help but notice the distinct geographic setting of this small community. It is situated in a small valley with the silhouette of the extinct, volcanic Butte Mountain in the background

IA man named Jose Maria Amador is the namesake of Amador county. It was established in 1854. Jackson is the largest city in Amador County and was established in 1848. Much the same as many of the gold rush settlements next to Highway 49, the early gold rush days served as a mining camp. In 1862 much of Jackson was destroyed by a raging fire. Jackson was rebuilt with many of the Civil War era buildings are much the same as the were on the historic Main Street in Jackson.

In 1854 Jackson became the county seat of recently established Amador County. Visitors and their families can see a brass plaque set in the sidewalk of Main Street in the historic downtown area. In May 1851 the election was held in which 1,014 votes were for Jackson and 1,224 votes were for Moquelumne Hill. A party of armed men from Moquelumne Hill chased Judge Smith to hang him. Over another disputed election count, Judge Smith shot and killed Collier on Main Street.

Three primary mines in Amador county were the Argonaut mine, the Kennedy mine, and the Eureka mine which remained active from the early 1850’s until World War II. These mines produced over some 4,000,000 ounces of gold, which was over half the counties total gold production of nearly 8,000 ounces produced from 19 mines. The gold that was produced in Jackson was over half the gold produced from the Mother Lode. The Kennedy and Argonaut mines have shafts that drop more than 5,000 feet into depth of the Mother Lode. Reportedly, they are the deepest mines on the continent.

This region was occupied by Native Indians known as the Sierra Mi-Wuk long before the arrival of pioneers turned miners arrived with hopes of striking it rich. These Indians called Jackson their home for thousands of years. They inhabited areas next to terraces, flat ridges, springs, and creeks. Their permanent villages were established on elevations that were above seasonal flood levels. The Mi-Wuks hunted in the regions for deer, acorns, and seed. ass and deer. In 1898, the Jackson Rancheria Bank of Mi-Wuk Indians was recognized by the Federal Government.

It is likely that once the Spanish explorers arrived in California there was some interaction between the two groups. However, it wasn’t until the gold rush that numerous large numbers of pioneers displaced the Native Indians from their land. Pioneers turned miners from all over the world settled in and around Jackson, and built a community that had a diverse ethnic population, such as Italians, Jews, Chinese, French, and English. Some of these people became ranchers and farmers, while others provided services and goods or they worked in the mines.

Reportedly, Colonial Alden Jackson is the namesake of the settlement of Jackson. Colonial Jackson was a veteran of the Mexican War veteran and in 1849 he visited the future community with a group of prospectors. Here in Jackson, he became a famous Attorney. He helped the Gold Rush miners settle disputes and claims without having to go to court.

Eventually Colonial Jackson relocated to the settlement of Jacksonville in Tuolumne County. It has been reported that Colonial Jackson was close friends the former Mexican governor to California named Pio Pico. Andreas was the brother Pio Pico and he who fought with pioneers s over the land grant of Arroyo Seco close to Amador. In the 2000’s Jackson has continued to grow. During this year of 2012, the community has come together in restoring many of the downtown buildings in the downtown area back to their original beauty during 2012. The local casino, named the Jackson Rancheria, has taken on a partnership with the local businesses to restore all the of parks in Amador County. These days, Jackson has become a very popular destination for tourists but has still retained its small-town feel.
