About Fair Oaks

In 1895, Fair Oaks, California was an agricultural community. However, before that, the Native Maidu Indian tribe inhabited the region. The region was inhabited by some miners from the California gold Rush about 50 years prior to the start of the community. There were some families who settled in the regions that are currently known as Fair Oaks, Carmichael, Orangevale, and Citrus heights.

It was a speculative promotion that brought about the community of Fair Oaks. In the local biweekly newspaper was an advertisement that read farm, field, and fireside for rural communities. In addition, the speculative promoters named the real estate ventures Sunset Colonies. The speculative promoters believed that it was certainly capable to promote and advertise its far outrageous colony projects.

A General named Howard wanted to find land that was suitable for another Sunset Colony, and arrived in Northern California to find it. He located the San Juan Grant. The president of the California National bank named Fred Cox owned the land. The owner of the North Fork Ditch was a man named Crawford Clark. Much of the water requirements for about 20 miles below Auburn, California were provided by the North Fork.

Mr. Clark and Mr. Howard couldnít agree on the sale of the land because Mr. Clark wouldnít sell the water rights. However an agreement was reached which gave Howard-Wilson the right to sell, advertise, and purchase land in the Cox and Clark tract between late 1895 and late 1898.

Mr. Howard started advertising the Fair Oaks colony in the Cosmopolitan and McClureís magazines as well as his own newspaper. This resulted in agents from Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, London, New York, and Chicago. The newest colony was named Fair Oaks, probably after Fair Oaks, Virginia.

Midwestern and Eastern families were soon reading in the many different advertising brochures, magazines, and newspapers, that Fair Oaks was a simply waiting for the gentleman and serious farmer to enter this semi-paradise and almost effortlessly retire or make a good living without any worries. There was an electric railroad planned, water was plentiful, the climate was moderate, and the soil was rich. Success awaited those who would take the chance.

Although many of the colonists did not survive some of the skilled and hardworking farmers survived in Fair Oaks. However, those who were persuaded by the advertising that promised a semi-paradise but werenít prepared to work long days became very disillusioned.

In 1898, the Pioneer Methodist Episcopal Church was constructed. In 1906, the Presbyterian Church of Fair Oaks was established. The grange hall housed the school. A one room schoolhouse was built in 1898. In 1902, a more elegant schoolhouse was built. There was a blacksmith, a doctor, and an unknown labor contractor brought in crews of Hindus, Mexican, Chinese, and Japanese workers to handle much of the heavy preparation of the land However, within about another year, another speculative promoter that had previous success in the older sister colony of fair Oaks, and roots locally, named Orangevale filled the gap. The Fair Oaks Development Company believed that could make the colony successful if it could provide some of the necessary services that the speculative promoters couldn't. Sacramento County was convinced by the Fair Oaks Development Company to construct a bridge across the American River. The Southern Pacific Railroad built a railroad line to the new Fair Oaks Bridge. Then the water system was improved by the development company by bringing in 28 inch steel water mains. These improvements provided a chance for Fair Oaks. However, by 1902 the company gave up in its efforts because there were so few sales.

Then Fair Oaks started to blossom. There was the completion of a business block that had world class architecture. Other shops including a lumber were opened. There was the establishment of an agricultural cooperative. Many fine homes were constructed. Then a bank was established. Dredging for gold on the American River had started in a major way. A rock crushing plant flourished from the tailings of the gold dredges.

By the early 1900ís, Fair Oaks seemed to be flourishing. However, in 1932, the agricultural community was dealt a difficult blow by nature in the form of a devastating freeze. During the early phases of the Great Depression many of the merchants and orchardists were not only struggling, but the freeze had erased many of their dreams of making farming a commercial success. Many had to find other work, although some struggled on. Many could now commute to other places of employment as the result of the improvement in transportation. In addition, a new breed of residents was arriving to the community as the result of the later boom in the aerospace industry coupled with the development of air bases in nearby North Highland and Rancho Cordova. Many of these new residents made their livings by working for organizations that were outside of the community.

Therefore, life was forever changed in Fair Oaks. However, if a person were to take a slow walk around the community, that person could see the vestiges of the almond and olive orchards, as well as the orange groves. Under many layers of remodeling are some of the original buildings are hiding. Some lucky visitor could possibly meet some people who were born from the 1920ís through the 1930ís who could tell first hand stories about what life was like when Fair Oaks was fulfilling its original design.
