About El Dorado Hills

Your dreams will start with the beauty of the San Francisco Bay and continue through the wondrous lands of mountain lakes, forest, rivers, and fields, by traveling to Northern California by sea. The region was first settled by Native Indians who arrived from Asia to Alaska long ago. Up until 1770, when a man named Gaspar de Portola conducted an expedition that went north from San Diego and Mexico to discover the San Francisco by land that the Bay was undiscovered by Europeans.

In 1542, a mariner named Juan Cabrillo missed the discovery of the bay, while exploring Alta, California as the result of the frequent fog. Through the snow, mountains, and desert, many from the East made a tedious overland trip to Northern California. The first man to do so was named Jedediah, who, in 1826, was leading a party of fur trappers from Santa Fe in 1826. He followed the Truckee and the Humbolt Rivers to the Sacramento River.

Water People started settling in the foothills and valleys. In 1839, at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers, a man named John Sutter established New Helvetia. Although the majority went to Oregon, there were a considerable number of immigrants arriving overland to the west by 1841.

In 1844, two men named Kit Carson and John Fremont crossed the Sierra up the Carson River and into El Dorado County to follow the Southern Fork of the American River to Sutter's Fort. In 1846, the Mormon followers of Brigham Young escaped from the Midwest, and crossed the Missouri River for winter quarters in Omaha on their way to California. There were 500 who volunteered for the Mexican War and they were trained at Fort Leavenworth. In 1847, the Mormon Battalion arrived at the San Diego Mission. Later that year, the Battalion was mustered out of service and some went to Salt Lake and some went to Fort Sutter. These immigrants settled in Salt Lake when Brigham Young arrived in Salt Lake later that year.

A man named James Marshall became the chief carpenter in Los Angeles for the American military in 1846. In 1847 he left for Sutter's Fort to locate a sawmill location for John Sutter. Later that year, work commenced on the South Fork of the American River at Coloma, in what is currently known as El Dorado County. The Mormons were hired to work at the sawmill later that same year.

When James Marshall made an observation at the sawmill, the story of gold became reality at Coloma. On the banks of the South Fork River, Mr. Marshall discovered gold in the sawmill tailrace in 1848. As soon as the word spread in all of the West and in California it was a gold rush to the empire county. In the east, news was slow. However, in 1849 the migration continued by ship or overland trail. In 1850, California was approved as the 31st state by the US Congress.

The old Colona Road was heavily traveled to Coloma, Uniontown, Green valley, Mormon Island, and Folsom from Sacramento. In 1851 a truss bridge replaced the ferry across the South Fork of the American River. There were 22 road districts established and supervisors were appointed to care for all of the specific roads.

In 1848, a trail was blazed over Echo Summit from Dry Diggings to South Lake Tahoe at Lake Valley by man named John Johnson. The quickest and most direct way over the Sierra was known as Johnsonís Cutoff. In 1857, stagecoaches were crossing over. In 1867, when the Central Pacific railroad, currently known as the Union Pacific railroad, crossed Donner Pass the traffic of cargo traffic eased somewhat. However, with the exception of a man named Snowshoe Thompson who used homemade snow skates to hike and deliver the mail between Genoa, Nevada and Placerville, in the wintertime snow closed the road. In 1860 and 1861, riders of the Pony Express galloped over the route. In 1895, the State Bureau of Highways was established and bought the road making it the first state highway. In 1923, paving was completed.

El Dorado Hills has one of the finest water supplies in the nation. Ample rain from the lower elevations and cold, clear cold water from snow melt in the mountains provide year round springs and streams. In 1850, Coloma was the first to use water ditches. Other canals and ditches followed by 1856 such as the Weber Creek and Coon Hollow Canal, the Union Flume, the Iowa Canal, the Gold Hill Canal, the El Dorado Canal, the Deer Creek Canal, the Coloma Canal, the Coray and Company Canal, the Chilean Bar Canal, the South Fork Canal, the Rock Hill Canal, the Natoma Ditch, the Negro Hill Ditch, the Mosquito Canal, the Eureka Canal, the Georgetown and El Dorado Ditch, the Prairie and Cosumnes Canal, the Michigan and Cosumnes Canal, and the Coloma and Indianville Canal.
