Foster City, California is located in the County of San Mateo. The population of Foster City was some 30,567 people according to the census that was taken in 2010. As the result of its close proximity to the communities in Silicon Valley, as well its local industries, Foster City is sometimes considered to be a portion of Silicon Valley. Foster City was established during the 1960’s on an engineered landfill in the marshes of the San Francisco Bay, on the east edge of San Mateo. Foster City was named in honor of T. The successor to Mr. Foster’s company, Foster Enterprises was operated by his descendants and remains active in real estate affairs all throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

The population was very diverse with 22.6% of the population or some 6,913 people being under the age of 18, 5.0% of the population or some 1,526 people being aged between 18 and 24, 32.1% of the population or some 9,801 people being aged between 25 and 44, 26.9% of the population or some 8,223 people being aged between 45 and 64, and 13.4% of the population or some 4,104 people who were aged 65 years old or older. For every 93.5 males there were 100 females, and for every 91 males 18 years or older there were also 100 females.
There were some 12,458 housing units that had an average density of 3,316.8 for each square mile, of which 57.9% or some 6,958 were owner-occupied, and 42.1% or some 5,058 were occupied by renters. The rental vacancy rate was 3.5% while the homeowner vacancy rate was 0.8%. Some 60.3% of the population or some 18,423 people resided lived in owner-occupied dwellings and 39.4% of the population or some 12,035 people resided in rental housing units.
In 1993 Visa Inc. started combining a number of scattered offices that were located in San Mateo, California to a location in Foster City. The headquarter for Visa were located in Foster City, and soon Visa was the largest employer in Foster City. Four buildings at the intersection of Vintage Park Drive and Metro Center Boulevard were owned by Visa Inc., which employed around 3,000 people at their complex in 2009. That same year Visa signed a ten-year lease agreement for the top three floors of 595 Market Street in San Francisco and relocated its top executives there.
