The economy in Florin was focused on agricultural production in the early 1900ís. The most common produce grown were strawberries. The region became noted as being a Japanese immigrant community as they were the predominate farmers in Florin and the dominant group in the small community.
The presence of Japanese immigrants in Florin wasnít always welcomed. The Sacramento Bee warned that as soon as a Japanese immigrant can produce a lease he is entitled to a wife. They will breed much the same as rats after receives a picture of his bride after sending a copy of his lease back to Japan. Florin, which is a farming community in the valley, is producing 85 Japanese a year that are born in America.
With the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the following war between Japan and the United States, the Federal and local treatment of local born Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants took a rather drastic downturn. In accordance with the executive order 9066 by Franklin Roosevelt and with a considerable amount of racial hostility and little fear the Federal Government made the Japanese American and Japanese immigrants and their families leave their homes and enter into internment camps. The Japanese American and Japanese immigrants were required to register as families. There were distribution hubs in Florin, where residents of Japanese ancestry were then transferred to internment camps a long way from the coast.
The character of Florin was forever changed by the internment. Japanese American and Japanese immigrant residents were forced to sell their land within only a few days and frequently for a price that was much below their fair market value. Some of the Japanese American and Japanese immigrant residents of Florin were able to return to Florin and begin anew after being released from the internment camps. However, the majority of these Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants had to relocate to other regions. As it once was prior to the internment, Florin ceased to be a Japanese American community and the strawberry industry died.
