Larkspur, California is a typical small-town with the exception that it has officially been recorded on the National Register of Historic Places. The residents of Larkspur have been rather successful in preserving the ambience of a small-town. By taking a relaxing walk down Magnolia Avenue, one can visit a variety of first-class restaurants, cafes, Queen Anne Victorian houses, boutiques, and specialty shops.
Larkspur offers its residents and visitors alike some very special places to dine, shop, relax, play and enjoy many of the things Marin County has to offer. In Larkspur, there are rather unique shopping malls, intimate coffee houses, stylish retail stores, and world-renowned restaurants. There are winding waterways and trails, and lush redwood groves in Larkspur. There are some 10 parks and every sport from windsurfing to horseshoes.
Larkspur is subdivided into two distinct regions that adjoin Highway 101. Its historic downtown is located just west of Highway 101, and an old quarry area, which is currently known as Larkspur Landing is located just to the east of the highway next to the shoreline of the San Francisco Bay. This Landing is a sprawling outdoor shopping area that offers many outdoor eating areas that include as the popular Marin Brewing Company that also offers some rather spectacular views of the bay. During the summertime months, Larkspur Landing features a Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings and hosts live music on Friday evenings. A small bridge across the highway permits both locals and visitors alike a way to access the advanced Golden Gate Ferry terminal, which is a departure location for those travelers who are going to the San Francisco Ferry Building from Marin. This 30-minute ride offers some beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island, as well as Mount Tamalpais. The Marin Airporter shuttle to the International Airport in San Francisco is located just across the way.
With the low crime rates and soaring public high school scores this family-oriented community is one of the most desirable places to reside in Marin County. The school scores in the Larkspur Elementary District, which serve both Corte Madera and Larkspur rank among the highest in California. Located within a few short miles of the downtown area are the Marin and Redwood Catholic High Schools, and the College of Marin is located only a few minutes away by bicycle or automobile.
Both locals and visitors alike can enjoy the Escalle Winery, which was constructed during the 1890's by a young Frenchman, named Jean Escalle, who planted wine grapes on the northernmost hillsides of Larkspur. In 1888, the impeccable Murphy mansion was built and is the current home of the world-famous restaurant, known as the Lark Creek Inn. This old Blue Rock building, which is currently the home of the recently renovated Lark Theater, which is one of the few remaining are deco movie theaters as well as the popular Left Bank restaurant are worth visiting.
Larkspur is located on what was once a portion of the huge Mexican land grants. Larkspur is located on what was once a portion of the Rancho Punta de Quentin, which in 1846, was granted to the brother-in-law of General Mariano Vallejo named Juan Bautista Cooper. Adjacent on the south was the Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio, which in 1834, was granted to John Reed.
The redwood forests that grew here provided the lumber for the emergent community of San Francisco. Although it wasn’t until 1890 when the railroad arrived that the population started increasing, the mills attracted the earliest pioneers.
During the summers, the residents of San Francisco enjoyed coming to the region. This area became popular with vacationers from all over the Bay Area by the early 1900’s.
A developer named O. Wright laid out the town-site in 1887. The following year, Mr. Wright advertised the 600-acre residential subdivision as being the most beautiful town-sites on the western side of the North Pacific Railroad in a gentle rolling valley that is bounded to the north by Mt. Tamalpais. The street names were chosen by Mrs. Wright. She also helped with the selection with the name Larkspur. Mrs. Wright mistook the copiously growing lupine on the hillsides for Larkspur.
As an ever-increasing number of vacationers arrived during the summertime months and in 1908, Larkspur became a town, the population increased steadily.
Although the building is currently known as the Silver Peso Bar and has been a bar since the 1930’s. The early 1900’s, barn doors from a blacksmith shop remain at 450 Magnolia Avenue. Corbet’s Ace Hardware, is a family-owned operation during the era of Home Depot, has been in the business for some 50 years and is located on the west end of Larkspur.
The Main Street in Larkspur features boasts some 15 eateries, which include the Italian Pasticceria Emprio Rulli, the Left bank, and the Lark Creek Inn are national dining destinations.
