In order to try to cross Donner Pass, the Donner Party, which consisted of 89 men, women, and children were following the California Trail in 1846. The heavy snows had already started, which made it impossible to continue when they arrived in late October. Their amazing can be learned at the Donner Memorial State Park. In 1866, Pollardís Station was the first known white settlement in the Truckee basin. At the west end of Donner Lake, it became a small township. There isnít much is known about the enterprising owner, named JD Pollard, except that he was considered to be an affable man. Before the railroad, stage coach stops over the mountain were frequent. For the California Stage Company, Pollardís Station was an important place to stop for a rest. At one time Pollardís Station had a sawmill, a general store, and two hotels.
In 1867, Pollardís hotel burned down. Later, the hotel was rebuilt but was again destroyed by another fire. The few residents relocated to the new community at Coburnís Station. Since Mr. Pollard knew that after the railroad was constructed there wouldnít be any need for the turnpike stages so the hotel was never rebuilt again. A man named Joseph Gray had already built a log station next to the wagon road at the intersection of what is currently known as the intersection of bridge and Jibboom Streets by 1863. Mr. Gray with his associate named George Schaffer constructed a bridge across the Truckee River that they charged a fee to cross. From then on, his log cabin was called Grayís Toll Station. The cabin currently still exists, but has been relocated to what is currently known as Church Street.
The first excursion train approached the summit in 1867. The 40 ton locomotive hauled in pieces on sleighs by George Shaffer and assembled close to what is currently known as the downtown depot in spite severe winter storms. The engine was used to transport lumber to the summit from Schafferís Mill, where crews were laying track in both directions.
The new community of Truckee comprised the whole region by the time the first train arrived in 1868. The new community included a hotel, 20 stores, and 50 buildings, which were primarily saloons. However, in 1868, 50 buildings were destroyed by fire. A new and larger community was constructed from the ashes of Coburnís Station. The new community had a school house, two churches, two theaters, a Central Pacific roundhouse, 11 restaurants, 10 dry goods stores, 25 saloons and almost 300 buildings.
The 2nd largest Chinatown on the Pacific Coast was created by the construction of the railroad. The Chinese were never accepted by the population of the community, although they were necessary to build the railroad. Chinatown was destroyed by fire a minimum of four times as the result of racial tensions. Eventually, the Chinese were convinced that they should rebuild their homes south of the river.
In the past 100 years, logging has been the primary industry in Truckee. George Schaffer and Joseph Gray constructed and operated the first lumber mill in 1886. Later, Mr. Schaffer bought out Grayís interest and constructed a larger mill in Martis Valley in 1871.
Because desperados of all types were attracted to the gambling houses and saloons and money was abundant, life in early Truckee was never dull. Frequent fires were constantly affecting Truckee, especially between 1868 and 1891. However, the determined resident were undaunted by the fires and rebuilt, each time building better structures than before.
The early days of vigilantes, tar and featherings, gunplay, and opium dens eventually died away as the years passed. There were new entrepreneurial challenges as a result if the increasing success of the lumber mills. The residents of Truckee set about building churches and schools. By the early 1900ís Truckee was being promoted as a growing winter recreation area. Film companies from Hollywood were attracted by the mountain charm of the region and arrived in the community as a hub for the budding motion picture industry.
Many lumber mills, including Mr. Schafferís operation in Martis Valley were forced to close as the demand for lumber decreased. However, at one time, there were two other industries that were gaining attention. Huge amounts of ice were required in the cities of New Orleans, Los Angeles, and San Francisco prior to the invention of artificial refrigeration. Tons of blocks of ice cut from ice ponds on Boca and Donner Lake. These ice blocks were packed in hat or sawdust and shipped by rail.
In 1866, Boca was also operating a lumber mill. However, in 1883, it became known all over the world when a brewery was built along the Truckee River. The pure, clear Boca water that created such a demand for ice was also good for brewing beer. Numerous barrels of Boca Beer were shipped all over the US and the product gained recognition all around the world.
Truckee became a popular region for winter sports by 1915. It featured a ski jump, a toboggan slide, and very large ice palace for dancing and ice skating. Members of the Truckee Ski Club participated in several competitions. Numerous visitors were brought to the region by special excursion trains to frolic in the snow and to enjoy the fresh air. The winter scenes were filmed by crews from the movie industry. It wasnít uncommon for famous movie actors to be seen on the streets of Truckee.
For the 40 years after the 1920ís, there was a period of little development and growth in Truckee, especially during and after WW ll. However, in 1960, the Winter Olympic Games were held 10 south at Squaw Valley, which placed the Tahoe/Truckee region on the map as a primary resort destination for recreation all year round. These days, the primary industry in the region is tourism. However, as the community of Truckee continues to grow, it is also becoming more diversified.
