The first inhabitants in the valley were a small tribe Chupcan Indians. The Chupcan Indians lived next to the streams in the valley that flowed north on the edge of the Bay, through the wide tule marshes and to their south were dominated by a great mountain. Large herds of antelope, deer, and elk along with the oak covered hills shared the valley with these Indians. Grizzly bears roamed the foothills of the mountains and salmon filled the streams.
The first outsiders to arrive in this region were Father Juan Crespi and Captain Pedro Fages, who led the expedition in 1772. The leading first colonists and Europeans to visit Monterey, California from Mexico, were Father Pedro Font, Lieutenant Jose Moraga, and Lieutenant Colonel Juan Bautista de Anza. The Spanish would explore but not settle in the valley for the next 50 to 60 years. A man whose ancestors were colonists/soldiers with Anza, named Don Salvio Pacheco petitioned the government of Mexico for the lands within the valley in 1828.
In 1934, when he finally received the land grant for Monte del Diablo, Don Salvio was serving as the senior civil servant at the Pueblo of San Jose. This land grant was 17,921 acres and generally covered all the way to north to the bay from the foothills of Mount Diablo to the hills of the valley from the Walnut Creek channel.
The son of Don Salvio, whose name was Fernando Pacheco, was immediately sent to occupy the land grant and start the cattle operations on the new Rancho that belonged to the Pacheco family. Up until 1946, when a series of revolts by some settlers from America took the government of Mexico from Alta, California, Don Salvio wouldnít relocate his whole family to the Rancho. These were prosperous times for the Rancho Monte del Diablo. The grand adobe, owned by Don Salvio remains located in downtown Concord, and became the cultural, social, as well as the business center of the area. The adobe, built by Don Fernando is currently a nationally registered historical landmark. This adobe overlooks the Bay as was built only few miles north of the Bay on some low hills.
Eventually Don Francisco Galindo would arrive from San Francisco to the Rancho in order to marry the daughter of Don Salvio, whose name was Maria Dolores Manuela.†The wood frame home owned by the Galindo family is currently located close to Galindo Street and the Clayton Road Extension, and is also a national landmark. Until her death in 1999, a fourth generation descendant of the original owners, named Ruth Galindo, retained ownership of the family property. Title to the property†currently resides with the Concord Historical Society after being transferred to the community of Concord.
The new communities in California in the central valley and on the coast were creating a large demand for raw materials and foodstuffs from the 1850ís through the 1860ís. The new American settlers in the valley as well as the Rancho Monte del Diablo, were providing coal, lime, grains, and cattle, which were in very short supply.†Next to the Rancho, there was a new community, known as Pacheco, which was prospering as a transshipment and industrial center. Its unique, inland, deep-water channel permitted supply ships easy access to the produce and the products of central Contra Costa County.
There was short lived prosperity for the community of Pacheco. A series of fires were continuously hindering its growth and devastating the community. Many years of heavy rainfall resulted in disastrous recurring floods, which soaked local businesses.†The warehouses and wharves in Pacheco were rendered useless as the result of the erosion that filled the ship channel with silt. In 1868, a search for a safer location by the devastated merchants of the community was accelerated by a major earthquake.
The solution was provided by Don Salvio Pacheco, his son in law, Francisco Galindo, and his son Fernando. In the center of their Rancho, on the bluffs close to the adobe, owned by Don Salvio, they arranged for a plan for a new community to be surveyed in 1868. They named their new community Todos Santos, which translates from Spanish into All Saints. They offered free lots to the residents and the merchants of Pacheco in 1869.
The community plan for Todos Santos was situated diagonally across the street that connected the old docks at Pacheco to Clayton and its busy coal fields. The new community would be divided into a public plaza and 19 blocks and cover 20 acres.
The new community wouldnít be identified by the name of Todos Santos for long. The Contra Costa Gazette heralded the actual name of the new community as being Concord within months after Todos Santos has been recorded as the official name. In spite of later protests and reminders that were published later by Fernando Pacheco, Concord remained the name of the new community.
The first merchant from Pacheco to relocate to Concord was a man named Sam Bacon. Mr. Bacon reopened his general merchandise store on the northern corner of Galindo and Salvio Streets.†Other merchants soon followed. Concord became rather prosperous as an agricultural support community for central Contra Costa County.†The population of Concord was 300 people by 1879. By 1905 the population doubled and that same year brought the incorporation of Concord as a town.
The population of Concord doubled again during the next 35 years. The small community of Concord would start WW II with a population of 1,400 people, comfortable homes, tree lined streets, a full service commercial area downtown, two theaters, a nationally recognized central plaza, a fine library, two railroads, five churches, a modern hospital, and an extraordinary high school. With a population of approximately 6,500 people, the year 1948 brought the incorporation of Concord as a city. These days, the old Rancho, orchards, and farms are neighborhoods. Concord was the largest community in Contra Costa County in 2000 with a diverse population of nearly 125,000 people. Concord is particularly proud of its rich history and equally confident of its future.
