About Davis
In 1868, Davis, California was established and whose namesake of what was known at the time as Davisville after a local prominent farmer named Jerome Davis. At that time, Davisville was a small settlement village that was primarily focused on a train depot and grain crops. Davisville was considered to be the most active station on the California Pacific Railroad.
Davisville started exporting lettuce, peaches, and apples when a shift started to irrigated agriculture from dry crops. This change included refrigerated train cars, the farmers in Davisville were capable of meeting the needs of the growing population. Davisville started flourishing with the addition of a new farming college.
The UC Davis is closely related to the history if the city. The urban regions in California were increasing significantly demands were not only being placed on agriculture during the early 1900’s, but also on the dairy industry for large-scale production of butter. With a need to improve the science other farming techniques in addition to butter-making, a campaign starting to be established for a new school for agricultural research and instruction. The University Farm School was developed in 1908. From those meager beginnings, University of California at Davis is now recognized internationally for its contributions to engineering, biotechnology, medical technology, life sciences, and veterinary medicine.
The major improvement for Davisville was the inception of the university. The name Davisville was changed to Davis by the Davisville Post Office. When the year 1917 brought the incorporation of Davis as a city the name change became official. It wasn’t long before urban amenities that included street paving, street lightening, and sewage and water system were implemented. Many local improvements were started that included the development of the first city park and the construction of a municipal building. With the University of California at Davis being a primary producer of growth during the middle 1900’s, the population of Davis grew quickly. Davis resisted pressure to build expansive shopping malls unlike many other communities and instead adopted policies intended to preserve its fell of a small-town. In the late 1900’s, Davis started focusing on the future condition of the city as well as environmental conservation.
Davis has progressed into a community known internationally for known for its the employment of socially and progressive socially innovative programs and commitment to environmental awareness having a current population of around 71,000 people. What was once a small farming community is now an amazing looking forward to a bright future and proud of its past.
Davis is located at the intersection of State Route 113 and Interstate 80, 385 miles north of Los Angeles, 70 miles northeast of San Francisco, and 11 miles west of Sacramento in the County of Yolo. Neighboring communities include West Sacramento, Woodland, Winters, and Dixon,
Davis is also located in Northern California in the northern part of the Central Valley in the Sacramento Valley. The elevation of Davis is approximately 52 feet above sea level. The total area of Davis is 10.5 square miles, of which 0.04 square miles is water and 10.4 square miles is land. Davis has become known for bicycle riders partially as the result of its flat topography.
The Davis climate is similar to that of close by Sacramento and is typical of the Mediterranean and Central Valley climate region in California, which is wet and cool in the wintertime, and dry and warm in the autumn, summertime, and springtime. Summer days are hot, and range from between 105 °F and 85 °F. However, the nights turn pleasantly cool, and nearly always drop below 70 °F. The Delta Breeze, which is a cool flow of marine air that originates from the Pacific Ocean via the San Joaquin River Delta in Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay. This oftentimes provides relief from the heat in the evening. Generally, temperatures in the wintertime reach from 65 °F to 45 °F, and 65 °F in the afternoon. Although the temperature occasionally falls below freezing, the average nighttime temperature is approximately 40 °F.
The average temperatures range from 75 °F in July and August to 46 °F in December and January. During the late fall and winter in Davis, a thick ground fog known as tule fog settles into the community. Visibility can be almost zero as the result of this dense fog. In the wintertime, this tule fog is the primary cause of accidents on the roadways, much the same as in other regions of northern California.
The mean annual rainfall is approximately 20 inches. The majority of this rain occurs between from the middle of November through the middle of March. Usually, there is no precipitation falling from the middle of June through the middle of September.
