Long before the white pioneers came here for more than 300 centuries, the Native Indians known as the Coastal Miwok resided on the stretch of hills and shoreline that is currently known as Sausalito, California. Under the surface of the current community of Sausalito these peaceful hunter-gatherers left burial middens, artifacts, and shell mounds. However, in 1775, when the Spanish ship named the San Carlos arrived and were bringing the first European explorers to enter by sea what is currently known as the San Francisco Bay, the Miwoks’ tranquil way of life was changed forever. From the small willow trees that grew next to the stream banks of this region, it came to be known as Saucito, which translates as the little willow, which is a name that eventually evolved into Saucelito, and ultimately came to become known as Sausalito.
An English seaman who was married to the daughter of the Commandant of El Presidio who in 1838, was the Mexican military garrison in San Francisco whose name was William Richardson, was provided a land grant of some 19,571-acres in what is currently known as southern and western Marin County. This area is what is currently known as Caledonia Street in Sausalito. He profited handsomely from his several successful business ventures.
The body of water in front of the Southern Marin County is currently known as Richardson’s Bay in honor of the founder of Sausalito. William Richardson ultimately lost his vast holdings, and, in 1858, the bulk of Rancho del Sausalito was sold to the Sausalito Land and Ferry Company. They laid out the streets, and then subdivided the central waterfront and hills into spectacular viewing lots, and he then purchased a small streamer, and convinced the Princess, to offer herself to him in order to attract prospective buyers from San Francisco.
The transportation center was created by some wealthy San Franciscans in gracious summer homes, and upper-class British expatriates ensconced in ornate Victorian mansions, occupied the central hills. However, even then the Sausalito was divers.
A vibrant mercantile culture was established on Water Street, which sometime later came to be known as mercantile working class mercantile culture which had been established next to Water Street, which is currently known as Bridgeway that included railroad workers, Italian and German Merchants, fishermen, dairy ranchers, dairy farmers, railroad workers, boarding house operators, railroader workers, German and Italian merchants, fisherman, dairy farmers, Chinse Shopkeepers, and Portuguese boatbuilders.
Sausaliti became a base of operation for bootleggers for Sausalito. During prohibition, the infamous Baby Face Nelson, who during prohibition had developed a conduit through those who were rumrunners to move their goods. Basements speakeasies and backyard Stills weren’t uncommon, and tarpaulin-draped trucks laden with contraband regularly rumbled through the community in order to meet the midnight ferry to San Francisco.
In 1937, when the Golden Gate Bridge was completed, the Sausalito’s ferry and train services were discontinued. IN 1941, The last southbound passenger train arrived in the community in in 1941. It seemed that Sausalito was destined to become a backwater and sleepy community. However, a major shipyard was rapidly built on the northernmost waterfront with the onset of World War II. He increased the suddenly swelling Sausalito’s small population to some 30,000 people. Until September, 1945, the Marinship yard operated 24/7and produced some 93 Liberty tankers and ships for the war effort.
The war effort ended as rapidly as it started. For the next several decades that is what the place that was defined as Sausalito. decades. Hippies, actors, artists, musicians, and even were drawn Sausalito’s striking beauty and cheap rents. Even a former bordello owner took refuge here, and brought the free-thinking Sausaltio. Some of the most notable were Sterling Hayden, Alan Watts, Shel Silverstein, Otis Redding, Jean Vardar and, of course, Sally Stanford.
Those who came created a bohemian aura that persists to this day, giving the town its reputation as an art colony and literary enclave. For many during that time, life was also a party in Sausalito, and famous haunts such as Zack’s, Juanita’s, No Name Bar and the Trident made for great entertainment.
With the return of passenger ferries in 1970, Sausalito became a popular destination for more mainstream visitors to the Bay Area. Today, its harbors and marinas host a dazzling array of pleasure craft from every corner of the globe.
