Casement Windows feature a classic window style yet provide superior light, ventilation and offer ease and curb appeal.
Trusted by Thousands of Homeowners Across Northern California
A casement window is hinged on one side and cranks outward like a door, so the whole sash opens to the breeze and then closes tight against compression seals. GVD Renovations & Remodeling replaces casement windows across Sacramento and the Bay Area, with a detailed fixed-price proposal before any work starts.

Casements give you the most airflow and the tightest seal of the common operable window styles. The entire sash swings open, so nearly the full opening ventilates, while a slider or double hung opens only about half.
That matters on Sacramento summer evenings, when the Delta breeze arrives and you want to flush hot air out of the house fast. The hinge can go on the left or the right, so we set it to swing the open sash into the prevailing breeze and scoop air indoors.
Casements also suit hard-to-reach openings, such as the window over a kitchen sink, because turning a crank takes less reach and effort than lifting a sash. If you want to compare French, push-out and double casements before you decide, our guide to types of casement windows covers each one.
A casement only seals and operates well if the hardware is right, so check these details on any quote you compare:
Compression weather stripping. The crank pulls the sash against the seals, so the window seals tighter the more firmly it closes.
Adjustable hinges. These let the installer square the sash after the house settles, which prevents dragging and gaps.
Hinge type. A standard (washable) hinge slides the sash away from the frame corner so you can clean the outside glass from indoors. An egress hinge keeps the sash at the frame corner to maximize the clear opening for a bedroom.
Operator and lock quality. A folding crank handle stays clear of blinds, and a multi-point lock pulls a tall sash tight along its length.
Glass package. Low-E glass with a low solar heat gain rating for west and south walls.
Manufacturers offer both hinge types. Anlin, for example, lists a standard hinge and an egress hinge for its Coronado casement window, and we confirm which one each opening needs when we measure.
A casement opens wider and seals tighter than a slider or double hung, but its sash swings outside the wall.
| Style | How it opens | Ventilation | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casement | Side hinge, cranks outward | Nearly the full opening | Breezes, tall openings, hard reach |
| Awning | Top hinge, cranks outward | Partial, sheds rain | Short, wide openings, baths |
| Slider | Sash glides sideways | About half | Wide openings by walkways |
| Double hung | Sashes slide up and down | About half | Traditional facades |
An awning is essentially a casement hinged at the top instead of the side. It vents during light rain and fits short, wide openings, while a casement fits tall, narrow ones and catches side breezes. Many homes pair the two, and you can read more on our awning window installation page.
Choose a slider or double hung where an outward-swinging sash would hit a patio, walkway or deck railing.
The main drawback is mechanical: the crank, hinge arms and outward swing have more moving parts than a sliding window. Expect these issues over the years:
Stiff or stripped cranks. A worn operator can be replaced without replacing the window.
Sagging sash. A sash that drags on the frame usually needs a hinge adjustment.
Wind exposure. An open sash can catch gusts and strain the hinge arms, so close it before a storm.
Outward swing. The open sash projects into the yard, which rules casements out next to busy paths.
Interior screens. Because the sash opens outward, the screen sits inside the window.
Size limits. Very wide openings need a pair of casements or a casement flanking a picture window.
New vinyl windows in Sacramento typically run $500 to $600 per window installed, and casements usually price above a slider of the same size because of the crank hardware and compression seals. Fiberglass, composite and wood frames cost more than vinyl.
Your total depends on window count, sizes, glass package, hinge type and any trim or stucco repair. Our Sacramento replacement window pricing guide compares frame materials in detail. After we measure, you get a detailed fixed-price proposal, so the number you approve is the number you pay.
Replace when you see fogged glass, drafts, cracked frames, or sashes that no longer lock. If your current windows still open, seal and look sound, you can wait.
In Sacramento's triple-digit summers, the glass coating matters more than the window style, so pair a vinyl or composite frame with dual-pane low-E glass. Read the NFRC label on the exact window: a lower U-factor means better insulation, and a lower solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) blocks more sun on west and south walls.
As an example of what is available, Anlin's Coronado casement carries NFRC ratings of 0.24 to 0.27 for U-factor and 0.11 to 0.17 for SHGC, depending on the glass package. Andersen sells casements in its 100 Series, made of Fibrex composite, and its 400 Series, which has a wood interior under a vinyl exterior. We are an Andersen Certified Contractor and an Anlin Certified and Authorized Dealer, so we can quote both side by side.
California's Title 24 energy code limits replacement windows in Sacramento's Climate Zone 12 to a U-factor of 0.27 and an SHGC of 0.23, with an allowance of 0.40 and 0.35 when you replace 75 square feet of windows or less. We confirm the rated values before ordering. The federal window tax credit ended for windows placed in service after December 31, 2025, and SMUD does not currently list a residential window rebate, so check SMUD or PG&E for any current offers.
Yes. A casement is often the easiest way to meet egress, because the full sash opens with no fixed panel blocking half the opening.
The California Residential Code requires a net clear opening of at least 5.7 square feet (5.0 for a grade-floor opening), at least 24 inches high and 20 inches wide, with the sill no more than 44 inches above the floor. Using both minimums together does not reach the required area, so the sash must be larger in at least one direction. An egress hinge helps by keeping the open sash out of the clear opening.
The code allows a replacement window to keep a smaller opening if it is the largest standard size that fits the existing opening and opens at least as wide as the old window. Our California egress window guide explains the details, and we size each bedroom casement during the estimate.
We measure every opening during a free in-home estimate and note which side each sash should hinge on.
You receive a detailed fixed-price proposal with the full scope before anything is ordered.
We order your custom-made windows. Lead time is 8 to 10 weeks (10 to 12 weeks for custom products), excluding delivery.
Our own trained crew removes the old window, checks the frame for rot, then sets, levels, flashes and insulates the new unit.
We adjust the hinges and operator so the sash closes evenly against the seals, then seal, trim and clean up.
Your project manager walks the finished job with you.
When a permit is required, we handle it through the City of Sacramento or your county.
Clean the hinge tracks and sill a few times a year, because grit is what wears operators and hinges. Apply a dry silicone lubricant to the hinge arms and pivot points rather than oil, which traps dirt.
Never force a crank that resists. Check whether the lock is still engaged or debris is blocking the sash, since forcing it strips the operator gears. Wipe the seals with a damp cloth so they keep sealing.
One accountable team handles your casement windows from estimate to walkthrough, with a dedicated project manager coordinating scheduling, communication and quality checks.
