How LP SmartSide siding works for Sacramento homes
LP SmartSide is engineered wood, made of wood strands bonded with resin and treated with LP's SmartGuard process, which protects against moisture, fungal decay and termites. You get wood's texture without the warping and rot of solid wood boards.
LP sells lap siding, panels, trim, fascia, soffit and cedar shake in one system, so new siding and the surrounding trim match. A partial replacement with mismatched trim is the usual giveaway of a patched exterior, and a single-system order avoids it.

Each product matches the others, which keeps corners, eaves and gables consistent. You can have it delivered prefinished with LP ExpertFinish in factory colors, or primed and painted on site in any color. Factory finishing is applied in controlled conditions, while field painting gives unlimited color choice. ExpertFinish currently offers 16 colors and a 15-year limited warranty on the finish.
The 38 Series is the thinner board and installs on studs up to 16 inches on center; the 76 Series is thicker and rated for studs up to 24 inches on center.
Which home styles suit LP SmartSide
Lap siding suits bungalows and Victorians, board-and-batten panels suit farmhouses, and cedar shake works for gables and craftsman accents. The same system covers a whole house, which lets you mix textures without mixing manufacturers.
LP SmartSide cost for a 2,000 sq ft house
Installed LP SmartSide typically runs $5.50 to $11.00 per square foot. Multiply it by your wall area, which is usually less than your floor area on a one-story home and more on a two-story. Window and door openings are subtracted. Teardown, repair of damaged sheathing, trim and painting change the total. At about 2,000 sq ft of wall area, that works out to roughly $11,000 to $22,000.

LP SmartSide fire rating and wildfire zones
LP SmartSide is combustible on its own. It is CAL FIRE-listed for California Wildland Urban Interface zones when installed as part of a qualifying fire-rated wall assembly, and we build that assembly where code calls for it. If your home is in the Sierra Foothills or another WUI area, tell us at the first visit so the assembly is specified up front.

LP SmartSide is the better choice if you want wood texture and easier installation, while Hardie is the choice when fire resistance is the priority. Vinyl costs less up front but gives up the fire resistance and crisp wood detail of the other two.
Disadvantages of LP SmartSide and engineered wood siding
Engineered wood absorbs water at cut edges and exposed fasteners, so poor sealing causes swelling. It must be painted and recaulked on a schedule, and it burns, unlike fiber cement. It is also not a fit for ground contact. Most problems trace to installation, which is why we follow LP's specifications.
LP SmartSide installation requirements
Seal every cut edge with LP-approved primer or paint before it goes on the wall.
Keep siding clear of the ground, roofing and hard surfaces by the clearance in LP's installation instructions. LP's required clearances are 6 inches between siding and finish grade, 1 inch above porches, patios and walks, 1 inch at the roof line intersection, and 3/16 inch at butt joints.
Use flashing at windows, doors and horizontal joints.
Fasten at the spacing and with the nails LP specifies.
We inspect your walls at the free estimate. Overlay is possible over a sound, flat, dry wall where code and LP specs allow it, but we recommend tear-off when we find rot or an uneven substrate. Improper installation, by either method, is what puts manufacturer coverage at risk.
LP SmartSide warranty terms, lifespan and maintenance
LP's limited warranty is 5/50: the first 5 years cover 100% of replacement of defective product, and coverage then prorates down through year 50, which means LP pays a shrinking share as years pass. Coverage depends on correct installation and finishing. During the first five years, LP's coverage includes 100% labor and material replacement for defective product; after that, the prorated coverage applies to the product, not labor.
Lifespan runs 20 to 30 years or more with proper installation and maintenance, backed by a 50-year limited warranty.
Plan on inspecting caulk and paint annually, since Sacramento's triple-digit summers and UV wear on finishes. Repaint on the schedule your paint manufacturer recommends, typically every 5 to 10 years, and sooner on the walls with the harshest sun exposure.

We went with James Hardie when it was time to replace our stucco due to its product rating as well as me not wanting to deal with cracking stucco over time. We went with fiberglass Milgard windows for replacing our single pane original windows from when the house was built (1960’s) The entire process from quote to completion was exceptional. The Sales Rep Patrick Monahan was helpful in breaking down the differences in all the different options and brought up pros and cons of different products from soffit vs none as well as differences in window material vinyl vs fiberglass without a high pressure sales tactic. The project started quickly after signing and my wife and I were blown away by the work ethic. Our Project Manager Vadim was always available and prompt with responses. There were multiple times he was able to give us peace of mind and that type of service is really helpful in today’s world with a project so large for us. The crew was absolutely the hardest working crew I’ve ever seen and we had many different contractors in the recent months. “Superior craftsmanship, solid work ethic, excellent products - along with professionalism and friendliness….. GVD did it again! Last year, GVD did a complete demolition/remodel of a guest bathroom for me. This year they did a demolition/remodel of a master bathroom suite and a renovation of another guest bathroom. GVD transformed the old 1991 bathroom suite with a massive Jacuzzi tub, deteriorating shower, outdated tile, old lighting and plumbing fixtures, clunky cabinets, and worn countertops. It is now a lovely suite with a sleek soaker tub, modern plumbing and light fixtures, beautiful tile, gorgeous cabinets, a wall that is entirely mirror above the sinks, new windows and a new exterior deck door with screen. We went with fiberglass Milgard windows for replacing our single pane original windows from when the house was built (1960’s) The entire process from quote to completion was exceptional. The Sales Rep Patrick Monahan was helpful in breaking down the differences in all the different options and brought up pros and cons of different products from soffit vs none as well as differences in window material vinyl vs fiberglass without a high pressure sales tactic. The project started quickly after signing and my wife and I were blown away by the work ethic. Our Project Manager Vadim was always available and prompt with responses. There were multiple times he was able to give us peace of mind and that type of service is really helpful in today’s world with a project so large for us. The crew that did the work came from Sacramento to Livermore and started the day at 8am and worked until 8pm. Everyday. That was wild to me. The crew was absolutely the hardest working crew I’ve ever seen and we had many different contractors in the recent months. I’m not sure if this is standard for GVD, your mileage may vary in this regard, but I was highly impressed. Upon completion there was a issue with one of the windows from the manufacturer and Vadim was able to get a replacement request issued a day after I told him. We have now experienced our first rain and there was an area the water was bypassing the gutter and again our project manager Vadim was quick to assess and address. If your looking for siding or windows get a few quotes obviously but I highly recommend this company. Kudos to the entire team’s professionalism, hard work, and attention.”

“Superior craftsmanship, solid work ethic, excellent products - along with professionalism and friendliness….. GVD did it again! Last year, GVD did a complete demolition/remodel of a guest bathroom for me. This year they did a demolition/remodel of a master bathroom suite and a renovation of another guest bathroom. GVD transformed the old 1991 bathroom suite with a massive Jacuzzi tub, deteriorating shower, outdated tile, old lighting and plumbing fixtures, clunky cabinets, and worn countertops. It is now a lovely suite with a sleek soaker tub, modern plumbing and light fixtures, beautiful tile, gorgeous cabinets, a wall that is entirely mirror above the sinks, new windows and a new exterior deck door with screen. It has gone from a heavy, over tiled, bulky room to a lovely, light and airy, calm and inviting space. It is actually quite stunning. I can’t adequately describe how thrilled I am with all three of my GVD bathrooms and the entire remodeling experience. From the initial contacts with estimator Gary and design consultant Danielle to project managers Ross and Serge, it has been such a smooth and seamless experience. My heart felt thanks goes to every single person and each professional workman who contributed to the projects. The carpenters, plumber, electricians, glaziers, tile cutters, painter, drywallers, and door and window installers were highly skilled and professional in their areas of expertise.
