About Orangevale
Orangevale, California is located in the county of Sacramento County. The community is a portion of the Roseville-Arden-Arcade-Sacramento Metropolitan Statistical Area. In the census that was taken in 2010, the population of Orangevale was some 33,960 residents, which was up from the population that was taken at the 2000 census of some 26,705 residents. The community of Orangevale it is located about some 25 miles northeast of Sacramento. Orangevale is well- known for its rolling hills that offer the best views of the rural environment that is in the center of an ever-growing metropolitan region, or the foothills of Sierra Nevada mountain range. Some of the residential properties in the region are zoned to provide accommodations for orchards and horses.
The community that was initially named the Orang-Vale Colony, started out as a portion of the land in the 1844 land grant from Mexico for the Rancho San Juan. There was a number of orange groves in this rural area. Some of the remnants as well a healthy oak trees are located in the Orangevale Park. Trails that were commonly made by the Maidu Indian tribe as were Oak trees. Many olive orchards were once in the region in addition to orange groves and some original trees can still be found along Walnut, Main, Orangevale, and Chestnut.
About 150 years ago, the area offered gradually undulating hills that were thick oak trees. Also there were trails made only by small animals and plentiful deer. The gold seekers from the eastern state and the Mexicans arrived from China and from Europe, as well as the Spanish. Spanish grants were subdivided and sold. Then the farmers and cattlemen traveled on the new transcontinental railroad all over the U.S.
Although it was first named Orange-Vale, Orangevale, was well-known for the enormous groves of oranges that were there in the existing in the large agricultural region. This area came to be known as the Mexican government land grant of San Juanita Grant in a map of 1884. Some maps that described the region was dated at the Sacramento recorder’s office in 1888. However, another map was recorded that accurately recorded the area also displayed a network of streets that had the name of the Orange Vale Colony.
Promoters from Sacramento bought some 3,200 acres of land in1887 of the early land grant and started dividing it into some ten plots. Then these promoters began searching for buyers in the Midwestern and eastern states. Some 20 children attended the first school, which, at the time was situated on the corner at Filbert and Central. Outside Orange Vale proper at that time was the Roberts School, built on the Robert s property in 1883 on Greenback at Kenneth, in an area later annexed to the Colony 1888. In Orangevale, one of the first buildings that was constructed was the Hotel Villa. Sometime later the hotel was taken to Greenback Lane where it still stands, and it has four gables on the yellow house with four gables. Greenback Lane is the foremost thoroughfare in Orangevale. Has numerous stories. Some Oldtimers believe that the first pioneers established a narrow dirt road. Some other pioneers believe that the narrow road was established by a group of Chinese and that these workers were paid in greenbacks, and since greenbacks were less valuable than gold, the name was selected as Greenback Lane.
Gradually, the idea to change the name of Orange-Vale came to be known as Orangevale, although it is frequently referred to it as the Vale. The colonist were arriving in ever increasingly numbers and the Colony was becoming incredibly successful where, during the same years other colonies in the state didn’t have as much luck. The difference was the availability of water. Ditches were dug in the eastern section, for placer mining on the Mississippi Bar, for which there was valid for the required irrigation for the orange groves, vineyard and other fruits such as peaches and plums.
In 1894, Orangevale won first place for the best display of budding oranges in San Francisco at the Midwinter Fair. For many years Orangevale didn’t have any specialty. The apricot and oranges were as good as those from. The prunes apricots, and lemons were as good as those from Riverside.
