However the return trip needed the use of the Manila Galleons to use the currents in order to return back to the Pacific which ceased in northern California. Therefore, a safe port in northern California was needed so that the ships could stop for repairs and supplies.
During the late 1500’s English swashbuckling activities next to the coast of California occurred, and western Mexico in the 1500’s added credence to the further urgency to the equip for a safe port. Sir Francis Drake was one of the more celebrated buccaneers of the period. While sailing around the world, Drake was looting Spanish vessels for Her Majesty the Queen. H moored his ship, named the Goldin Hind, during the summer of 1579. In what is currently known as Drake’s Bay.

That is when English navigator named Vancouver arrived in area, and in honor of the buccaneer, named the San Francisco Bay. Sir Francis Drake went ashore and had his crew hung brass plaque to claim the land for the Queen of England. While Drake was in the area for some six weeks, he didn’t sight the San Francisco Bay, probably because of the thick fog.
Meanwhile, in 1595, a Portuguese native named Sebastiano Cermeo was told to explore the coast line of California as Spain was relentlessly trying to find a safe port in the middle of the Acapulco-Manila route. Cermeo landed his ship, named San Agustin, in what is currently known as Drake’s Bay following a difficult four month journey across the Pacific Ocean, Cermeo landed his ship, named the San Agustin in what is currently known as Drake's Bay. However, a winter storm hit the bay and sunk their ship while Cermeo and part of his crew explored the surrounding area, the navigator and his crew of some 70 men returned to Acapulco on a small manufactured ship, which was an incredible feat primarily because he had the help of some friendly coastal Native Indians. The sailors stayed away from the coast, fearing another shipwreck. Cermeo saw nothing of the entrance to the great bay. However, Cermeo named what is currently known as Drake's Bay, or La Bahia de San Francisco, in honor of the saint who established the Franciscan order.
In 1602, the fourth time the bay area was almost discovered, was when one of Cermeos’ officers named Sebastian Vizcaino was ordered to sail back to Drake's Bay in effort to find the sunken San Austin. Although, he explored the coast of California extensively, he didn’t find the San Francisco Bay area. His overblown celebration of Monterey Bay highly influenced future adventures in northern California and that was a determining factor in determining that the capital of Alta California in Monterey. Cortez intended to discover the mythical straits of Anion, which was the northern passage that was thought to be connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Then Cortex sent many vessels up the Pacific Coast of Mexico in 1532, Cortez. One ship reached the edge of what is currently known as Baja, California although the journey largely a failure. In 1535, Cortez settled Californian colony in 1535 close to what is currently known as La Paz. However, after only a year, the colony was abandoned.
Throughout the late 1500’s English, Portuguese, and Spanish sailors traveled next to the coast of California, in an effort to find a safe harbor. However, the entrance to the San Francisco Bay wasn’t found. Chance, fog and geography forever changed the history of the area by delaying white pioneers from establishing a settlement next to the bay, and concealing the Golden Gate. A land expedition was ordered by Spain and led by Gaspar de Portolá in a futile effort to encourage its diminishing military influence in the area while white pioneers were finally the first to find the bay in 1769. To add to San Francisco's poor start, it wasn’t until after they had overshot their real target, which was Monterey, and then didn’t even realize that they were the first white pioneers to find the bay.
