The Rohnert family, who were the owners of the Rohnert Seed Enterprise are the namesakes of the community of Rohnert Park, California. A native of Detroit Michigan and a successful businessman named Waldo Rohnert bought a vast ranch in the region in 1929, and managed to reduce flooding in the fields by utilizing a rather crude drainage system. Rohnert Park is located about some 50 miles north of San Francisco in the County of Sonoma. According to the United States census that was taken in 2010, the population of Rohnert Park was some 40,971 people. It is the sister city of Hashimoto, Japan and was one of the first planned communities in the United States. Located close by is a portion of the California State University system, which is known as Sonoma State University. Rohnert Park is the third largest community in the county and is located in the southern central plain of the County of Sonoma.
As evidenced by the walkways and bicycle paths that connect the attractive neighborhoods and beautiful tree-lined boulevards, Rohnert Park was developed for families. Each neighborhood in Rohnert Park was is developed around an elementary and a park. and elementary school. Rohnert Park is encompassed by grazing lands and where nationally sought-after cheeses, fruits, and boutique and organic are grown and produced.
Rohnert Park is a recreation and sports destination in the Wine Country within the County of Sonoma. Rohnert Park can be accessed by a major California south/north highway known as US Highway 101, that stretches nearly the entire length of California. This highway bisects the residential and business regions of the community of Rohnert Park.
The communities of Cotati and Rohnert Park have a history that is interwoven. The coastal Miwok Indians were some of the original inhabitants of the area. Named after their Miwok chief, the name of their village, Kota’ti the root name of the community name Cotati.
In payment of his military service, the Mexican government granted a Rancho Cotate to Captain Juan Castaneda in 1844. This grant included the property on which Penngrove, Cotati, and Rohnert Park would be developed. Up until 1849 when a Doctor named Thomas Page bought the ranch it passed hands many times. The Page family owned this property for several years, and made some decisions in roadways that are still in effect.
However, this property was broken up many times during the late 1800’s. A part of this land was purchased by a seed farmer named Waldo Rohnert who is the single namesake of Rohnert Park. Up until the 1940’s and the 1950’s, the primary industries on the former Rancho were agricultural. Then commercial and residential regions started being developed in order to accommodate the large arrival of post-World War II servicemen who were in need of housing.
Two men named Maurice Fredricks and Paul Golis surveyed and laid out the plan for a settlement on the northernmost reaches of Cotati, and during the 1950’s, Rohnert Park started taking shape. The year 1962 brought the incorporation of Rohnert Park and in 1963 was followed by Cotati.
The 128-acre Regional Park at Crane Creek offers horseback riding, biking, and trails that are also accessible by wheelchair. There are also some incredible bird-watching opportunities available, picnic tables, and an 18-hole Frisbee golf course.
Located on the picturesque campus of Sonoma State University, is the Maureen and Donald Green Music Center. This music center is a world-class performing arts complex that offers a musical education wing as well as multiple performance venues. The crown jewel of the Green Music Center is the acoustically superlative 1,400-seat Sanford and Joan Weill Hall concert venue. Patterned with the Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood in mind, Weill Hall also includes a rear wall that can be completely opened onto a terraced and landscaped lawn, to consume the capacity of the audience for summertime concerts.
