Campbell, California is located in the San Francisco Bay area as part of the Silicon Valley in Santa Clara County. The population of Campbell was 39,349 people according to the census that was taken in 2010. Campbell is the original home of the creator of eBay, named Pierre Omidyar, as well as eBay itself although the community isnít a primary high tech community like so many of its neighbors. The Pruneyard Shopping Center is located in Campbell. This shopping center, an open air, sprawling retail complex that became involved in a famous case that established the extent of the right of free speech in the state, which was decided by the US Supreme Court. The South Bay offices of the FBI are currently located in the Pruneyard Shopping Center.
During the last two centuries, the landscape of the rich Santa Clara Valley has undergone some dramatic changes. For hundreds of years the Ohlone lived in the oak filled and rich grass valley. The Ohlone lived in seasonal villages by gathering acorns from the numerous oak trees, hunting the abundant wildlife, and fishing in the many different streams.
In 1777, the Spanish established the Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe as well as the Mission of Santa Clara de Asis, which forever changed the lives of the Ohlone people. In order to sustain the cast herds of Spanish cattle that grazed on the floor of the valley, the Ohlone planted fields of wheat for the Spanish. Cattle roamed freely throughout the valley and the land was divided into very large ranchos when, in 1821, Mexico won its independence from Spain. The land was primarily used for raising livestock by the Californios. Numerous early settlers started to migrate to the rich Santa Clara Valley with the coming of statehood and the 1848 discovery of gold.
A man named Benjamin Campbell bought 160 acres of what was previously Mission grazing land five years after he arrived in California in 1851. He then went back to Missouri to marry his sweetheart, whose name was Mary Louise Rucker. Afterwards, Mr. Campbell was the leader of a wagon train back to Campbell, California. Much the same as other pioneers, the Campbell family soon started growing wheat and constructed a farmhouse. What is currently known as Campbell Ave, was once the tree lined driveway to the Campbell ranch house.
Some of the local ranchers as well as the Campbell family granted the right of way through their land to the South Pacific Coast Railroad in the 1870ís, in order to help with the transportation of their crops to markets outside of their local area. The community became the center of activity in 1886, when the small depot know as Campbell Station was constructed. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell began to subdivide their land in 1888, which eventually become known as downtown Campbell.
The agricultural market produced by the farmers of the Santa Clara Valley eventually became open to the consumers back east as the result of the 1869 completion of the transcontinental railroad. Small family farms and fruit orchards became the way of life in the valley. By this time, Campbell was being called the Orchard City. The population as well as the economy of the community started to develop around the flourishing industry of agriculture.
Numerous local orchardists started pooling their crops and selling them to packers in the Santa Clara Valley as early as 1887. The local farmers determined that they could handle the fluctuations of an unstable economy by banding together in cooperatives. The Campbell Fruit Growers Union was established in 1892. Cooperatives and companies owned by growers became the industry standard. The two primary cooperatives in Campbell, namely the Campbell Farmers Union Packing Company as well as the Campbell Fruit Growers Union, had become part of the statewide California Apricot and Prune growers Union by 1917. Eventually, this union became known all over the world as Sunsweet.
In the 1890ís, there were huge improvements made in the methods of commercial canning. The community was becoming renowned for having some of the best canneries in the state as well as some of the best fruit products. Mass production had become a reality by 1900, with the advent of new machinery for canning. Drying yards as well as canneries provided work for the majority of the people, which created an economy that helped the small community develop and expand, although the orchards that were operated by families still surrounded the community.
The year 1952, brought the incorporation of Campbell as a city. These days, Campbell is still proud of retaining its small town identity. High tech industries, homes, and highways have overtaken the orchards in the valley. Through all of these changes the people of this valley their creativity and their energy, as well as the industry are continually making Campbell a part of the Valley of Heartís Delight.
