The 1850’s is when the history of Granite Bay, California began. This is when gold miners were doing their gold seeking on the banks of the American River. Originally the first name of the settlement was Granite Bar. On the banks of this beautiful river that there were an estimated 37 gold mining settlements.
Granite Bay is located in the unincorporated county of Placer. In 2000 Granite Bay had a population of around 20,000 people and also has an area of about some 25 square miles. It is located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, on the eastern edge of the Sacramento Valley. It is also located Some 25 miles on the northern shore of Folsom Lake.
As a result of the excellent recreational opportunities, low crime rate, numerous churches, great location, and high quality of life, Granite Bay is a wonderful place to live. The community of Granite Bay is home to some of most exclusive and finest homes in the Sacramento area.
Winters are usually rainy and cool, while summers are usually dry and hot. The high temperatures in the summertime average around 95 degrees F. However, with the usual cooling evening breezes the average summertime temperature is reduced to around 60 degrees F. In the wintertime the average temperatures range from lows of approximately 40 degrees F to high temperatures of around 54 degrees F. Sometimes there may be an occasional frost. The rainfall annually averages close to around 25 inches per season. This rainfall mainly occurs during the winter months. In 1987 this community was formally officially acknowledged as Granite Bayvice and input.
Gold miners started arriving into the banks of the American River. They were the first to name the settlement, which was Granite Bar. On the banks of the American River there were around some 37 gold mining settlements. As the result of the almond and olive orchards that were planted, from 1852 through 1954, Granite Bay started attracting gold miners. To some gold miners the location is remembered as the Sacramento River Road. Originally, this place permitted gold miners easy access to travel back and forth with their supplies. In addition to the gold miners taking advantage of these abundant natural resources while the numerous cattle ranchers began using the access to water as well as the grassy slopes and access to water to raise their cattle.
Folsom- Auburn also as a unique and long history. It started out as an ox-cart track which linked the 49’ers making clams next to the American River. It provided a way to move supply from Between Folsom and the town of Auburn to the town of Folsom. It came to be known as a popular trail for bandits to come get rich quick by pilfering stealing money and goods by coming through this trail that was carrying supply’s. A bandit named Rattlesnake Dick was one of the most famous robbers of the time. He was nicknamed that name as a result to his rapid transition from being an honest gold miner at Rattlesnake Bar, into a sneaky and dangerous outlaw. Sometime later in1862, on a road that ran parallel to this road, there was a section in the Central Pacific Railway system, which ran between Folsom and Auburn.
Granite Bay was also called Allen’s District during the 1800’s. The name was after a man named as Hiram Allen. The family lived next to the Cavitt family who resided on the western end of the road. In the meantime the Stallman’s family lived at the eastern end of the road. These days, a primary road through one of the older parts of Granite Bay become known as Cavitt Stallman and the Junior High school was named Cavitt Jr. High. One of the primary gated communities is named Shelborne Estates, which was originally was a portion art of a 450 acre Allen ranch, with major crops of pear, peach, and plum orchard, which transverses all over the agricultural landscape. Another road in Granite Bay was named Olive Branch Road because Olives was the main crop at the Allen’s ranch.
There are many differing opinions as to how Granite Bay was named. In 1987, Granite Bay was formally acknowledged as an independent community that. At that time most of the houses were located at the east end of Douglas Boulevard, which was a portion of greater Roseville. This was somewhat of a rural area that was taken on the way to Folsom Lake State recreational area. On none of the historical maps is name Granite Bar listed. Carrolton, which is located where what is currently known as Doton’s Point and is also the nearest gold rush community.
