In 1850, next to the banks of what is currently known as the Petaluma River is where the settlement of Petaluma, California was established. The year 1858 brought the incorporation of Petaluma, which then became the oldest community between Eureka and San Francisco.
The Petaluma River has a long and storied history. Those pioneers who thrived by being in close proximity of the Petaluma River and therefore played an essential role the in success of the community. In addition, this river was the third busiest commercial waterway in their state of California.
Eggs were probably the most noteworthy and transported goods between the northern counties in San Francisco as well as people produce, and people. Petaluma would become the largest and richest community in Marin, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties in the 1800’s.

Over 2,000 Native Indians and General Vallejo had a very large agricultural opportunity. These Indians labored hard sed and the Adobe served his headquarters. General Vallejo owned several large heads of horses, some 24,000 heads of sheep, and some 10,000 head of cattle. By 1845, the General was one of the most politically powerful and wealthiest men in California.
In 1857, Several of the deeds of property that were in the hands of General Vallejo were challenged and tied up in lawsuits for several years following the occupation of California by American troops, General Vallejo was forced to sell the Adobe by 1857. For several years, ownership of the Adobe had changed hands many times and eventually the Adobe fell into disrepair. In 1951, the State of California acquired it along with some five additional acres of adjacent land. The Petaluma Adobe was restored to the same condition that it was in 1840, and is currently a California State Historic Park.
In 1854, one of the oldest structures in Petaluma was constructed, was the Great Petaluma Mill. In the middle 1800’s, it was a food locker for the majority of the food that was served at San Francisco restaurants. These days, the old mill is a riverfront that offer patrons at one the restaurant or shop in the specialty shops. Visitors and guests will find relics and old pictures that tell the history of the Great Petaluma Mill.
