The year 1992 brought the incorporation of American Canyon as a city. The city is situated on the southernmost end of Napa County and approximately 35 miles northeast of San Francisco. World War II brought about the development of American Canyon. Between the 1940’s and the 1950’s the Rancho Del Mar and the McKnight Acres subdivision were completed.
The form of government in American Canyon is a Council/City Manager, and is a general law city. A five-member City Council makes all of the city related policies. The Manager of the City Manager, serves under the direction of the city council performs day-to-day administration. There is one elected Mayor i9n addition to four elected Council Members. The city council elects the Vice Mayor. The City Manager serves as the chief executive if the city of American Canyon, and is appointed by the Council. There is a staff of about 90 employees in American Canyon. In addition, as many as 60 seasonal/part time staff as well as additional 24 sheriff deputies under contract to the city.
Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Community City, Police, which are contracted by the Napa County Sheriff’s office, and Human Resources, Finance and Administration are the other departments within the city government. There are few major crimes and American Canyon is a safe community. A contract with the Napa County Sheriff’s provides all law event services. The Police Department utilizes the resources from the Napa County Sheriff’s Office for major investigations and incidents and believes in the philosophy of community policing and is active at community events. The department responds to all calls for service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The Fire Protection District in American Canyon serves the city, and the Board of Director governs the City Council. The Protection District is Managed by an appointed Fire Chief. A vote by the citizens is how the Fire District is formed. This system replaced an organization that was all-volunteer.
The City of American Canyon is situated in southernmost Napa County, with its rural rolling agriculture hills and picturesque backdrop. This is the San Francisco Bay Area’s entry place to the Sonoma and Napa and Valley wineries. These regions are recognized internationally for producing some of the finest wines in the world.
American Canyon is surrounded by a green belt, which includes the foothills, which are covered with Vineyards, of the Sulphur Springs Mountains to the northeast, the 640-acre Bernice and Jack Newell Wilderness Preserve to the east, and the 500-acre wetlands preserve, as well as the Napa River to the west. On the north, the Napa County Airport is connected to the City, and next to the City on the south, is the City of Vallejo. Major highways include Highway 12 that connects with Interstate-80 approximately three miles to the west of Sonoma on the west, and Highway 29 that runs south and north through the City, and approximately three miles to the east. American Canyon is currently six square miles.
Sacramento to the north-east San Francisco to the southwest are less than one hour’s drive to Intterstate-80, during other than peak hours. Highway 37 runs west to Novato, in Marin County where it connects with an alternative route to San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge on Highway 101, which is located some two miles south of American Canyon. Generally, the climate is mild, and has northeasterly winds from the San Francisco Bay. Temperatures in the summertime run between from 50 and 90 degrees. Temperatures in the wintertime run between 40 and 60 degrees. The average rainfall is 24 inches per year and the number of clear days per year is 265.
The City of American Canyon is home to one high school, one middle school, and three elementary schools and is part of the NVUSD (Napa Valley Unified School District). In the near term, NVUSD is planning to build one new middle school, and two new elementary schools. The Napa Valley College is about six miles north while Solano Community College is located some 15 miles east in Fairfield. Many universities are located near to American Canyon. These include the Pacific Union College, located just north of Napa, California State University Maritime Academy in Vallejo, and Touro University at Mare Island.
Local events are well-attended and very popular in a very engaged in American Canyon. Many of these events are small ones, such as the annual Nerf Battle, which is one of the largest signature events, and the 4th of July Celebration, which is attended regularly by approximately some 3,000 people.
