A man named James Marshall constructed a sawmill on the South Fork of the American River for a man named John Sutter, who was his employer. In the tail race of the sawmill, Mr. Marshall found some specks of gold in 1848. The Gold Rush started as soon as the word of gold got out. Seamen, soldiers, and merchants flocked to the region over hills and up ravines. There were over 1,000 men working the grounds at the new mining camp by that summer. However, robberies and murders occurred with startling regularity at the isolated mining camps next to the American River. In 1849, a jury found three accused guilt. The men were hung, which was the first hanging in the Mother Lode. As the result of many other hangings the community came to be known as Hangtown.
Hangtown was the third largest community in the state by 1854. The temperance league came along with the increase in population as well as a less morbid name for the community. As early as 1850, the name of Placerville had been recommended. The year 1854 brought the official incorporation of Placerville as a city. An election was held in an effort to take the county seat of government from Coloma that same year. However Placerville wasnít the only competition, as three additional ran but none of the rivals could muster sufficient votes to defeat Coloma.
Placerville attempted the effort again two years later and this time there were only two additional communities. However, the official vote showed that Coloma had won, but a group of indignant residents of Placerville called a meeting to let the powers that be know about their suspicions of election fraud and stuffing the ballot box. The State Legislature was sufficiently convinced by the evidence that, in 1857, Placerville became the county seat by an act of the Legislature.
A fire almost destroyed Placerville in 1856. In 1859, the community was granted a new life from the Comstock silver strike in Nevada. Placerville had been the westernmost terminus for the Overland Trail all throughout the 1850's. There was a very large reverse migration in 1859. The Placerville/Carson Road was the home the greatest period of staging and freighting by horse drawn vehicles ever known between 1859 and 1866. In 1873, the community was disbanded as the result of a dispute with the railroad. The year 1900 brought the reincorporation of Placerville as a city.
Much of the mail to and from California was letters by anybody who was separated from their loved ones, including ranchers, cow punchers, and gold miners was piling up in the office of the postmaster in Placerville, However, between the next stop for the male and Placerville was the Sierra Nevada mountain range, which was 10,000 feet of snow crested granite. This mountain range had just defeated the only man who would carry the mail over it.
A man from Norway named John Thompson walked into the office of the postmaster a few days later. Mr. Thompson explained that his efforts at gold mining hadnít worked out. He told the postmaster that he wanted to carry the mail over the Sierra on his back in the wintertime. The postmaster replied that he was sorry, but the contract carrier is the only one who can sign the contract over to you, and he has disappeared. The postmaster didnít have the authority to hire Mr. Thompson.
For the next five days, Mr. Thompson returned to the post office every morning. Finally, the post master gave in but warned Mr. Thompson that he didnít have the authority to hire or pay him. Mr. Thompson was soon carrying sacks of letters that weighed between 60 and 90 pounds over the snowy peaks. Every two weeks, Mr. Thompson left Placerville and hiked more than 8,000 vertical feet up to the summit of the Sierras and down to Genoa, Nevada, close to Carson City. Usually, Mr. Thompson ski to Genoa in only a day. People started calling him Snowshoe Thompson.
Snowshoe Thompson was the only mail carrier that traversed the Sierra Nevada mountain range on a regular basis between 1855 and 1868. However, it wasnít long before the railroad company managed to get a line over the mountains. Even Snowshoe Thompson couldnít outrun the railroad, although he was valiant and strong. The services of Snowshoe Thompson were no longer needed by 1868, when the railroad succeeded in spanning the Sierras. However, Snowshoe Thompson had never been paid during his 13 years of carrying the mail. The postmaster in Placerville postmaster hadnít ever been given authority to issue a paycheck.
These days, on the corner of main and Sacramento Streets in Placerville, there stands a statue of Snowshoe Thompson. Placerville is still the center of the Mother Lode. The industry has changed from mining to recreation and tourism, light manufacturing, agriculture, lumber and has become famous for the production of fine wines and its vineyards. The offices of the El Dorado government remain in Placerville. However, when the rich history of this community is recalled, than colorful name of Hangtown seems to have endured.
