A man named Juan Bautista de Anza was the leader of the first overland expedition to find locations for two missions one pueblo and one preside and to bring colonists to California from New Spain. On his way back to Monterey, he chose the locations for the Mission San Francisco de Asia in what is currently known as San Francisco, and the Presidio of San Francisco. In the Santa Clara Valley, he found the locations for the pueblo San Jose and the Mission Santa Clara de AsÌs. The first commercial farming of broccoli in the United States was started in San Jose, by brothers Andrea and Stephano D'Arrigo in 1922.
