The first people to inhabit the region currently known as West Sacramento were the Patwin Indians. These Native Indians frequently numbered in the hundreds and on the west bank of the Sacramento River, they established villages. These Patwin Indians took made the most of the abundant natural resources that the water and the land offered. All of their requirements were provided by their environment. They crafted rafts from vines, tough grasses, and willows, and also crafted boats, fishing nets, and baskets and fished and hunted.
In the 1800ís the introduction of white pioneers dramatically changed the peaceful lifestyle of the Patwin Indians. Because of the abundance of fur bearing animals, many trappers and hunters were drawn to the Sacramento Valley. However. The population of the Patwin Indians was decimated by the diseases the white pioneers brought with them. Between 1833 and 1837, smallpox and malaria devastated Patwin Indians. The population of the Native Indian population in the Sacramento was reduced to 20,000 people from 60,000 people by the time the epidemics were contained. An ever increasing number of white pioneers were arriving in the valley. The few Patwin Indians that remained either became enslaved of employed white pioneers, which brought the Patwin cultural lifestyle to an end.
The first white pioneer to settle permanently in the region of West Sacramento was a Flemish traveler named Jan Lows de Swart in 1844. This man became known as John Schwartz, constructed built a shack six miles south of the confluence of the Sacramento and the American Rivers next to the west bank of the Sacramento River. The Mexican Governor Manual provided Mr. Schwartz with a land grant for an area of land 20 miles long and one mile wide in 1845. Mr. Swartz named his newly acquired property after his native homeland, Rancho Nueva Flandria. With some assistance from his brother George, Mr. Swartz developed established a salmon fishery next to the river. They engaged in cultivating melons and potatoes and raising livestock in addition to drying and pickling salmon. Then, in 1848, the great California gold rush occurred. Thousands of miners arrived in the region after the gold at Sutterís Mill was announced.
Mr. Swartz sold 600 acres of rancho Nueva Flandria to a man by the name of James McDowell in 1846. Mr. McDowell, with his three daughters and his wife, whose name was Margaret, Mr. McDowell settled in the region currently known as Broderick. The violence that frequently marked the tumultuous times of the gold rush era touched the McDowell family. In May of Mr. McDowell was shot and killed in a barroom brawl that he had reported instigated in 1849. Hi wife Margret had to find a means to support her children and herself after losing the sole supporter of her family.
As a means of earning some income Margaret McDowell first took boarders into her home. However, but she soon came to realize that this wasnít sufficient income. She then realized that her most valuable asset was the land she owned. Some 160 acres of land was mapped out, which was then divided into 41 blocks, by a land surveyor that Margret hired in 1849. She named the new community Washington after selling individual lots within this platted region. A man named August Kay purchased the first for $500. During the decade that followed, the rural community of Washington experienced a considerable increase in shipping activity and business development. The California Steam Navigation Company was one of the first companies to be established in the community, which was drawn to the region in 1859 as a result of the nearby Sacramento River. The other economic enterprises that took place in early Washington included restaurants, saloons, and hotels that catered to the requirements of tired travelers. Many travelers welcomed a rest stop at the community of Washington and making the harsh journey through the marshlands on their way to Sacramento.
During the early days of West Sacramento, the farming and fishing industries found success. Fishermen realized that there was profit potential in clams, crayfish, eels, catfish, sturgeon, and salmon. The community on the river was providing fish to markets in San Francisco as well as Sacramento. Also, the fertile soil of the valley produced abundant crops of sweet potatoes, cucumbers, melons and corn. Around this time, the dairy industry was also developed. A man named Mike Bryte was one of the most well-known dairy farmers in the region. In 1849, Mr. Bryte arrived in California to try gold mining. In 1853, Mr. Bryte purchased a dairy farm that was quite successful, while he didnít make a fortune in gold. Mr. Bryte used the steamships to transport his dairy products to regional markets when the California Steam Navigation Company arrived in Washington. Mr. Bryte used the profits from this operation to expand his holdings. He farmed 2,500 acres in Sacramento County, raised 100 young stock and 150 cows. And owned 1,500 acres of land by 1879. Mr. Bryte became a member of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors and later became sheriff. In the 1900ís, the property that Mr. Bryte owned was subdivided and is what is currently known as the community of Bryte.
The region continued to develop, prosper, and grow in time. In honor of US Senator David Broderick, the name of the community was changed to Broderick. After 1900, the three communities of West Sacramento, Broderick, and Bryte cumulatively came to known as East Yolo. The population of East Yolo increased to 2,638 people from 1,398 people between 1900 and 1920. The current community of West Sacramento was built on the foundation of these communities. With the completion of the Deep Water Ship Channel, the Port of Sacramento was opened to deep sea traffic in 1963. In 1946, Congress authorized the project and in 1949 construction began. The roots of this community are deeply embedded in the community spirit of the past, while West Sacramento continues to grow and change.
