The year 2003 brought the official incorporation of Rancho Cordova as a city, following over 20 years of advocacy. In the state of California, this was the 478th city. Rancho Cordova is located in the easternmost portion of Sacramento County and is a community with a rich history including the home of a successful aerospace company, a flourishing military base in its time, and the first 12 miles of railroad in California.
The community elected to incorporate in order to provide an increased level of service to the residents of Rancho Cordova, to provide greater control over regulatory matter, planning, and local use of land, to increase accessibility and representation of local government, and to retain and improve quality of life as well as its identity.
In 2002, the residents of Rancho Cordova demonstrated overwhelming support in the ballot for incorporation approving the incorporation by a vote of 77.6%. That same year, the first Council members of the new city were also elected and included leaders and longtime residents in the Rancho Cordova community such as David Sander, Kenneth Cooley, Robert McGarvey, Linda Budge, and Mayor David Roberts.
The community of Rancho Cordova annexed a 1.2 square mile parcel of land between Hazel and Sunrise avenues south of U.S.50 in 2010. Of the population of Rancho Cordova who are 25 years old or older, 88.3% have a high school education or greater, 23.2% have a Bachelorís Degree or greater, 5.3% have a graduate or professional degree, and 14.2% are unemployed. Of the population of Rancho Cordova who are 15 years old or older, 33.1% have never been married, 44.2% are currently married, 3.1% are separated, 5.8% are widowed, and 13.8% are divorced.
