Sacramento County is the home of Rancho Cordova. The community is part of the greater Sacramento metropolitan region. Rancho Cordova is the largest region of employment in the Sacramento area. According to the census that was taken in 2010, the population of Rancho Cordova was 64,776 people. The region attracts more than 50,000 commuters.
Originally, the community was called Hangtown in 1855. Then about 1900, during the period of the California Gold Rush, the community was renamed to Mills Station and then renamed again to Mayhew Station. Actually the community was named for the Cordova Vineyard. Cordova Village and Cordova Vineyards were the original names of the community prior to it being formally named Rancho Cordova. In 1955, an official post office opened. In the middle 1800ís during the California Gold Rush period some Placer mining activities were taking place in the Rancho Cordova area.
In 1844, a man named William Leidesdorff was given grant to the 35,500 acre Rancho Rio De Los Americanos. However, in 1848 Mr. Leidesdorff passed away and left some of his properties including his Rancho to his heirs. In 1855, a Captain named Joseph Folsom bought Rancho from the heirs and established the community of Folsom.
There were way stations nest to the Coloma Road. An early community in the Mills region had a two story inn owned by a man named Louis Lepetit in 1852. Four stage lines came through the area, with two following the river to Coloma and two going southeast to Placerville. The inn was destroyed by fire during the 1880ís, and Mr. Lepetit might have rebuilt on the northern side across the road.
From the 1850ís through the 1880ís there was a strong community of orchards and vineyards growing up. Maps of the region show familiar names such as Deterding, Kilgore, Lauridson, Dauenhauer, Shields, Carroll, Kelley, Mendonca, Williamson, and Studarus. These names have been preserved as place names. One of the early pioneers was a man named John Studarus, who had 13 children. The family farm was operated by Charles, his supposed eldest. The second or third eldest named John Jr. bought five acres of land at Hangtown close to the location that Mr. Lepetit owned and built a hotel. He built what is currently known as Mills Station in 1911. The commercial general building housed a grocery store and a tavern. There was a large ballroom on the second floor. The building was also the home of the Post Office, which was run by Helen and William Henry, two of his children.
During the late 1870ís William Henry Studarus passed away and Helen Studarus McCray, who was the Post Mistress, passed away in 1982 or 1883. William Henry also helped his father run the store, selling gasoline, hardware, and groceries.
In 1956, a man named Tom Raley purchased Mills Station. The Raley organization believes he ran the grocery store, but community residents donít remember it being called Raley's. The building was relocated back north of the Boulevard approximately 200 feet after negotiations between the Sons and Daughters of the Golden West, Raleyís, and the Fire District in 1972. Although never quite being successful, the building was refurbished as a restaurant that changed hands numerous times in 20 years. In 1991, the last tenant moved out and the building sat idle, only used by transients and vagrants. It was preserved, secured and relocated once again. Finally, Mills Station has been restored as a community center at the Mills Light Rail Station/Mather Field about 1,000 feet away from its original location. The agricultural heritage of Rancho Cordova lost some ground between the 1930ís and the 1940ís, when Northern California experienced a long period of drought. Then the State Legislature raised the rates for property taxes. It became ever increasingly for farmers to keep their land in productive.
All of the young men who were returning from WW II were looking for places raise their families, purchase a home, find a job, and settle down. A man named Roland Federspiel formed a partnership with a contractor named Jacobsen and a man named Glenn Ahlstrom and a contractor named Jacobsen to construct homes on land that had formerly been vineyards. There hadnít been any production housing in the US up until that point after the War. Homes had been built in small numbers or individually.
The building started at the intersection of Zinfandel Drive and Folsom Boulevard. The model homes were the first three homes on the western side of the street. Originally, duplexes on the opposite corners housed the first office of the Grapevine newspaper as well as post office and the sales office. For the Grand Opening, Art Linkletter came out to cut the ribbon and there was a playground for children whose parents were looking at the model homes.
The name Cordova Vineyards came from Mr. Federspiel who had selected name after Cordoba area in Spain. The first post box was provided by a man named Glenn Ahlstrom who brought it from San Francisco. The U.S. Postal Service permitted the name Rancho Cordova. The streets were named after wine grapes.
Folsom Boulevard started filling up with commercial enterprises as the community grew. The early businesses included George E Johnsonís Cordova Inn and the Cordova Village Shopping Center. During the space race from the 1950ís through the 1960ís the majority of the residents of the community went to work for either Mather Air Force Base or Aerojet. Most of the people who worked at Mather Air Force Base lived off base because the was little in the way of housing on base. There were many people who came to the community to establish the organizations and businesses that a real community needs to prosper and thrive in addition to people who found the new Rancho Cordova a desirable place to live. Early residents opened the florist shop, churches, a travel agency, medical offices, the veterinary office, Baskin Robbins Ice Cream, the Hallmark Store, insurance agencies, and gas stations. These community builders were also priests and pastors, the chief at the Fire District, the general manager at the Park District, the manager at the Chamber of Commerce, and the principals at the junior and senior high schools. They also established the local branches of the Elks, the Moose, JCís, the Optimist Club, the Kiwanis, and the Rotary.
The year 2002 brought the incorporation Rancho Cordova after attempts in 1961 and in 1978.
