Winters, California is located in the northern part of the state in the western Sacramento Valley in the rural County of Yolo. According to the 2015 census the population of Winters was 7,034 people. It is part of the CA_NV, Arden-Arcade-Yuba City-Sacramento area.
Winters is a small community located in the western Sacramento Valley on Putah Creek close to the northeastern foothills of the Vaca Mountains. It is also located next to interstate 505, some 11 miles from Vacaville. Winters is around 60 miles from San Francisco, California, and almost 30 miles from Sacramento.
The community has a combined area of some 2.9 square miles of which 0.03 square miles is water and 2.6 square miles is land according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
A man named William Wolfskill, who was originally from a Kentucky but was an immigrant from Mexican Alta California, received a grant of land from Mexico, in 1842 for Rancho Rio de los Pulsion from the Governor of Mexico, named Juan Bautista Alvarado. His brother named John Reid Wolfskill, began planting vineyards and orchards to improve the agricultural development of the Sacramento Valley on his lands. In 1849, Mr. Wolfskill transferred much of Rancho Rio de los Putos to Mr. Reid, and in 1855, transferred the rest of the property brother.
. In 1875, The Winters the post office was opened. The year 1898 brought the incorporation to Winters. The name honors a named Theodore Winters, whose ranch provided the majority of the property in the settlement. The heirs of Mr. Wolfskill deeded some 100 acres’, of the ranch, owned by the Wolfskill family to the University of California, Davis that had been established in 1908. The property was to be used for an experimental orchard.
