Many cities including San Francisco that were located over the San Andreas Fault were struck by the Great Earthquake in 1906. Many residents of San Francisco who lived in cottages left the city never to return. Numerous residents of Mill Valley, California never left again. That same year, the population of Mill valley increased to some 2,000 people that were evenly split between summertime and permanent residents.
Cement sidewalks started appearing, dirt roads were oiled, and bridges were constructed over creeks. In 1908, the first City Hall was established and in 1910, a Carnegie Library opened. Mail delivery was started, many roads were paved, and Mill Valley had a population of some 2,554 people by 1920.
The most destructive fire in the history of Mill Valley occurred in 1929. From the Middle Ridge region, this fire sped down the mountain and in spite of the desperate efforts of everybody, some 117 homes were destroyed. The remainder of the community was only saved by a miraculous change in the direction of the wind.
Sometime between World War I and World War II, the ambience of Mill Valley started changing as the result of the accessibility via the Golden Gate Bridge by automobile to Mill Valley. Construction was booming as the major business became real estate. In 1929, the first commercial area to develop outside of the center of Mill Valley, which was known at the time as the Locust Avenue shopping area, was started. The direction of the Corte Madera del Presidio Creek was redirected and the marshes that were located east of Miller Avenue were filled. The primary arterial route had been Highway One, which came to be known as Camino Alto, that stretched through Tamalpais from Sausalito next to the junction on the easternmost edge of Mill Valley and over the hills to Corte Madera and beyond.
The resulting heavier traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge resulted in the realignment to what is currently known as Highway 101, with a bridge that crossed Richardson Bay. Up until passenger service was discontinued in 1940, the railroad continued to function in Mill Valley. When the population of Mill Valley was some 7,331 people, freight service was stopped during the early 1950’s.
With Marinship during WW II, in Sausalito, there were new workers arriving from all over the nation. Housing was required for the residents in Sausalito and other close by communities. Following the end of the war, many residents never left the region. The economy of the nation was changed considerably and accelerated by the war effort, continued to expand after the end of the war. Most people had money to spend with some left over. However, many residents elected the relatively quiet, safe and more suitable suburban areas. This pattern continues to be prominent.
Since the mid-1960s, population has generally remained somewhat constant at around some 13,000, people since the middle 1960’s, although there has been an explosion in the population outside of the city limits which brings the regional total population that includes Strawberry, Alto, Muir beach, Homestead Valleys, Tamalpais, and Mill Valley to a much larger number. Currently, in Mill Valley, many apartments and homes house one or two working adults as opposed to the traditional families.
Working together with public agencies, the residents of Mill Valley have permanently saved much of the open lands that shield Mill Valley from other communities in southern Marin. This saves Mill Valley from becoming a portion of the ever-continuing suburbs such as those that occupy other parts of California. In 1966, a new Emmons, Bernardi, Wurster-designed Mill Valley Public Library was opened. This library houses the only official historian in Mill Valley, which is the Lucretia Little History Room. A 9,132 square foot addition to the library was completed in 1998, which provided the additional space needed to meet the expanded requirements of the community. This included access to the online catalog in the library as well as a considerable expansion to the public Internet workstations.
The library currently houses the Library Foundation, the friends of the library, and the Mill Valley Historical Society. The entrance to the Library is graced with a work by a noted sculptor named Richard O’Hanlon, who made his home here in Mill Valley.
Mill Valley has been celebrated through a titled Mill Valley California, which was written by a local schoolteacher, named Rita Abram, which is about the splendors of life in Mill valley that attracts youths from all over the nation every summer. We survived the overspill from the 1960’s San Francisco Haight-Ashbury Flower Children, as well as the follow-up, which was written by Cyra McFadden titled a Year in the Life of Marin County, with its irony of a self-indulgent lifestyle in Mill Valley.
Currently, Mill Valley is surrounded by large regional shopping malls, including five between San Rafael and Mill Valley. The local merchants are in hopes that the enjoyment of shopping in a real downtown area that offers personal and friendly service can survive.
And still…and still, this continues to be a place that welcomes visitors and is a much better place than most.
