The Nisenan, who were a branch of the Maidu Indians, who were living in area around Lincoln, California were very hospitable long before the white settlers arrived on this continent. These Indians developed a large village at the location that is currently known as the community of Lincoln. There is an abundance of natural resources in the plains and in the surrounding verdant hills. People from back east started arriving in the region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains once gold was discover. They were all trying to strike it rich. Although settlements seem to be established overnight, the location of Lincoln remained unsettled until 1859.
A man named Theodore Judah who initially anticipated a new settlement in this area. Mr. Judah, was a somewhat young engineer for the railroad, engineer, he plotted the region for the Sacramento Valley Railroad and also had the title to the location of the planned railhead. However, there were problems with the funds construction of the tracks ceased the constructions of the tracks temporarily. Then the president of the railroad bought the land from Mr. Judah. A man named Charles Lincoln Wilson mapped out the location for the new settlement, within weeks of his purchase. By 1859, Mr. Wilson had sold some 46 lots at auction. The foundation of Lincoln was made possible by these new landowners.
In 1861, the railroad arrived in the area, which quickly had a positive impact on the economy on Lincoln. From virtually everywhere white settlers arrived in order to transfer from the stagecoach to the railroad. However, It might be days before the railroad train left the area. These customers were a boon for local shops, restaurants, and hotels. However, the initial success of the settlement didn’t last long. The passengers went right along with extension of the railroad line northward.
However it was never intended for Lincoln to become a ghost town. Veterans from the Civil War were relocating westward looking for productive farmland offered to be the next economic boom. They grazed their cattle and planted orchards in the adjacent hills. The first of many fruit packing plants were established in Lincoln by the late 1800’s. This provided employment to the community foe the next 50 years.
A man named J. Whitney was also attracted to the region. Mr. Whitney to owned the Spring Valley Ranch, which was currently known as location of a master planned community at the Twelve Bridges in Lincoln. During their 1800’s Mr. Whitney eventually became the wealthiest man in the county of Placer. Mr. Whitney was an adaptable rancher who participated in everything from growing raisins to horse breeding. Mr. Whitney is perhaps best known for the production of wool by his flocks of Australian Merino sheep.
More employment for the new community was made possible by the discovery of coal. There were many coal mines that were open after the 1873 discovery of coal, although many of the locals had been aware of its existence for several years. In order to fuel the furnaces all through the valley, carloads of the ore started began coming out of Lincoln.
In 1875, the most important discovery was made. A man named Charles Gladding, who was a resident of Chicago, was visiting San Francisco when a newspaper story caught his interest. The article reported a road crew discovered a large layer of clay in the region of Lincoln. Mt. Gladding just had some 25 years in the pottery business and needed no other educement to go to the county of Placer.
In conjunction with two partners named George Chambers and Peter McBean, Mr. Gladding invested some $12,000 to establish Gladding, McBean & Co. This company served for over 100 years would serve as the foundation of the economy of Lincoln. These days Lincoln has a diversifed economy and is continually growing. New industries and residents selected for attitudes, lifestyle and location. An engineer for the Central California railway system named Theodore Judah had heard that the raliway system was to be constructed in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The reason for this relocation was to move supplies the the gols mining regions. Believing that he was making a smart investment, Mr. Judah purchased some of the property in the region for some $600. Mr. Judah sold the land to a Colonel named Lincoln When the railroad plans were canceled he sold the property to a Colonel named Charles Lincoln Wilson, who was president of the railway system. A named Mr. Wilson, who quickly survyeed the settlement of Lincoln and started selling lots.
The year of 1859 brought the incorpation of Lincoln as a town. A number buildings are from the time period between the 1860’s and the 1900s. These structors are currently the locations of services, shops and restaurants.
