For thousands of years prior to the community of Stockton, California was even conceived, Native Indians resided in the Central Valley. A group of Yokuts from the Northern Valley who were part of the Yatchicumne tribe lived in what is currently known as the Stockton region when the first white pioneers arrived. In order to keep their homes above flood levels, the Yokuts constructed their villages on low mounds. A Yokuts village known as Pasasimas was located on what is currently known as the Stockton Channel in downtown Stockton on a mound between Harrison and Harrison Streets.
Numerous Native Indian were exposed to new deadly diseases or were forced into millions as the result of the arrival of white pioneers in Northern California. However, these days, many Native Indians people still live in San Joaquin County. The community of Stockton was transformed from a small community into a flourishing commercial that supplied the miners that were traveling to the foothills of the Sierras as the result of the discovery of gold in 1848 east of Sacramento on the American River.
In late 1848, when a German immigrant named Captain Charles Weber elected to try gold mining but quickly realized that serving the need of those people who were trying to make their fortunes in gold was a considerably better profit making opportunity, the community Stockton really came to life. In 1849, Charles Weber bought more than 49,000 acres of land by means of a Spanish land grant and founder Stockton, exactly for that reason.
The location where Charles Weber constructed the first permanent residence in the San Joaquin Valley is the region currently called Weber Point. Over the years, the community of Stockton has had many different several names, such as Mudville, and Tuleburg. However, Charles Weber named the new community Stockton after Commodore Robert Stockton. The first California community to have an English name was Stockton. Up until then every other community had a Native Indian or Spanish name.
The year 1850 brought the official incorporation of Stockton as a city by the County Court. Later that same year the first election on the new city was held. The community of Stockton received its charter from the State of California in 1851. Early white pioneers were people who were seeking gold from Canada, Mexica, the Pacific Islands, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Asia. Shipbuilding was the main industry after the Gold rush until after WW II, before the conversion to agriculture as the primary main industry in the community Stockton.
