As its name implies, the community of South Lake Tahoe is positioned at the southernmost edge of the famous and beautiful Lake Tahoe. The fact is that Lake Tahoe is an extremely large lake. In fact, it is the largest alpine lake in North America. It is so large that part of it occupies both the State of Nevada as well as the state of California. It is located within the County of El Dorado, which is the historic location of South Lake Tahoe.
Prior to adventurers and pioneers were located in the area, there were already many tribes of American Indians in the region and they knew the location of the pristine Lake Tahoe. It has been said that there were between three and five tribes of Washoe Indians who continuously went to visited Lake Tahoe, because they believed the lake was home to many powerful spirits of nature. Many of these Indian tribes also resided around the surrounding regions of Lake Tahoe, and benefited from the bountiful fruits of nature as well as the peaceful atmosphere.
However, eventually, the Washoe tribes wouldn’t be the only ones to know about the existence of this superb natural treasure. Two explorers named Lt. John Freemont and Kit Carson on addition to their native Indian guide found themselves atop the Res Lake Peak, where they first set eyes of the beautiful blue waters of lake Tahoe in 1844.
It wasn’t long before the discovery that was identified by these two explorers, that many people, particularly entrepreneurs and explorers began arriving at Lake Tahoe. Therefore, some simple lodges and inns were built all around the Lake to provide lodging for the ever-increasing number of visitors.
However, as beautiful and wonderful Lake Tahoe was, in 1859, another discovery was made, which came to be known as the Comstock Lode. It was determined that this region is currently a portion of Virginia City in Nevada, and was a very rich silver deposit. Therefore, a silver rush soon came to be. Numerous pioneers turned silver miners s rushed to the region with the hopes of striking it rich within the mines of Comstock Lode. The course that the history of lake Tahoe was to take would be greatly affected by this discovery made in close by Comstock Lode.
The majority of the people that went to the mines traveled through Lake Tahoe. Therefore, this region was once home to many different indigenous Indian tribes who lived in harmony with the many different species of flora and fauna, which was soon over run by the building of more enterprises, such as roads, railroad stations, trail tracks, and even more lodging spaces. Sometime later, communities and towns such as the community of South Lake Tahoe expanded next to the border of the largest lake in the United States.
In addition, these intense constructions that were the result of the silver rush in neighboring Comstock Lode, resulted in the deforestation of the pine forests that surround Lake Tahoe. The proud standing pine trees all around Lake Tahoe were harvested in order to construct hotels and sometime later build casinos, so as to make vast amounts of earnings and profit. Thriving towns, communities, towns, and sometime later on cities would soon be established next to the banks of Lake Tahoe. However, there was a decline in price as the result of the forest harvesting in the previously forested regions next to Lake Tahoe.
Much the same as other communities that surround the national gem known as Lake Tahoe and currently the City of South Lake Tahoe are making some changes in order to remedy the damages that were brought about in the past so that future generations can have a chance to enjoy and see the beautiful Lake Tahoe.
Nearly none or very few of the historic inns have survived to modern times. The majority of which were destroyed by fire, a problem that constantly bedeviled Truckee and Virginia City. What firefighting methods there were, were primitive at best.
These days, Lake Tahoe is still one of the most beautiful lakes in the nation. It is impossible to diminish the first reactions of arriving at Lake Tahoe and seeing this huge lake of sapphire blue water that is located between two ranges of mountains. The community of South Lake Tahoe is located in one of the most exclusive settings in the nation. It is located at the border of an Alpine lake of immense environmental value and natural beauty.
Ever since the late 1950’s, the draw of the scenic marvels, the neighboring gaming casinos in Nevada, hiking, boating, and the exceptional skiing facilities, has made the region a popular all year-round destination resort. South Lake Tahoe is a wonderful place to live, work, play, and raise a family. The community has the atmosphere of a small town with all of the amenities of a big city.
