Not many people know how it got there, but it was some of the local teenagers who christened it, which resulted in a bunch of lava rocks being scattered about the property where the Lava House stands. A famously rich man who invented seat belts named Jerry Ganz built the Lava House and the chief architectural direction was the extensive use of imported lava rock. The city presented many different roadblocks to Mr. Ganz. He spent nearly 20 years fighting city officials to get his architectural dream approved. However, only two years later construction was halted before being finally approved, and to this day, it has remained empty. The community of Tiburon has tried desperately to sell the house, even trying to remove what was left of the house after a fire in 1997 in order to attract more buyers, but to no avail. These days, it is primarily used as an improvised party location or as a meeting place for photographers who want to get a good view of the Bay. However, exploring the twisting balconies, the hidden subterranean rooms, and the maze of steep staircases is also popular, both by day and by night.

Tiburon was ideally in position to become an important part of the railroad system in California during the 1880’s. Close to the Pacific coast and San Francisco, in 1884, Tiburon served as a hub for ferries and trains, when the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad began stopping there. During the late 1960’s, trains stopped traveling through the depot in the late 1960s. However, the community of Tiburon took over the property and converted the former depot into the Tiburon Railroad and Ferry Museum. These days, visitors and their families can see what life was like in Tiburon during the early 1900’s. The ground floor is committed to an enormous model display of what the railroad-community of Tiburon looked like between 1900 and 1910. From green spaces to buildings to boats and trains, this exhibit points out all aspects of Tiburon. However, on the second floor is the Depot House Museum, which has been refurbished to replicate how the different stationmasters of the depot, lived there with their families over the years.
